does brawler require that the general fights?

The tooltip for brawler only says that to increase it the general should have low bodyguard casualties. This seems strange. In other words, if the general just sits back and does nothing while his army wins all the battles for him (thus 0 bodyguard deaths), he can level up brawler?

I think it means you should engage in fights, but make sure to lose as few of your bodyguards as possible.
