Total War: ROME II - Emperor Edition

Divide et Impera Part 1

The bonus AI get are ridiculous
Im currently playing Rome about 60 turns in (on normal difficulty for battles and campaign) and am at war with the Ardiaei, my former vassal who now owns the Illyrian province, and the Odryssians, who own Thrace and Macedonia.

I have been defending Apollonia with a full stack of auxiliary forces for the majority of the campaign and have wiped out dozens of full stacks from both enemies, yet they seem to have no problem churning out new stacks every ~2 years, consisting of their best units. It is absolutely ridiculous how especially the Ardiaei are able to field a full fleet and 2-3 full stacks at the same time and are able to regenerate them within a few turns while only having a single province while I struggle to field less units while having nearly 5 times as many settlements.

I just defended against 2 of their stacks, followed them and wiped them out to the last man, now, 9 rounds later, I am again besieged by a full fleet and 2 full stacks of decent units.

Ive played hundreds of hours of DEI on higher difficulties in the past and never encountered such a situation, wtf is going on?

Yes, it seems quite ridiculous at times.

On Normal diff the AI doesn't get that many bonuses (it does get some but they're not insane).

Price difference between Ardiaei units compared to Roman units is vast.

Hastati are 825, Principes are 1180.

Compare with other barb facs e.g.
Arverni (who are some of the pricier barbs),

Naked spears (elite spears) are 525, and you can get some infantry with significantly better stats than principes for 1320.

Their units are just much more cost efficient, so you're always going to be fighting heavily outnumbered when you fight against barbarians

@Corsair

The problem is that the Ardiaei are able to field plenty of elite troops aswell.
Their upkeep (as shown ingame in the unit info) is 13k per turn and yet they are able to not only field that without problems, but also recruit new stacks in record time and rebuild their provinces that Im destroying every few turns. Their province income as shown ingame is less than 4k so they are on a deficit close to 9k but still have money to spare.

I suspect its just a bug but I havent started a new campaign to confirm yet.

@Arveron/Johann, do you have any screenshots of examples of their armies pls?

I didnt guess the upkeep value, I managed to see all of their army (3 full stacks + the fleet) and calculated it unit per unit since I couldnt really believe it. This was before I had abandoned Appolonia and captured Iader so they only had the 1 province, which had an income of a bit less than 4k so yeah...

I just killed 2 of their stacks in ambushes a few rounds ago after taking Iader (only 1 general survived), they are now back to having 2 full stacks, a full fleet and recruiting a third stack while having 3 cities, one of which I had completly dismantled before abandoning it maybe 10 rounds ago.

Their individual armies are easy to beat but they replenish them so fast that I get bogged down and eventually suffer casualities heavy enough that I have to recruit new troops, while they manage to field another stack in the same time over and over.

I just updated DeI to the new version and will start a new game now.

Most of the units in those screenshots you sent are peasant/lower tier infantry, not elites. Cavalry's by far the most expensive thing in DeI, and they only have 1 unit.

Also what's your army composition atm?

As Rome i always find it more efficient to have 4 armies with ~~ 8-10 auxilliary per army (gallic cavalry and light infantry/ranged is so much more cost efficient than the Romans)

Also imo Italian auxilliary medium infantry is more cost efficient than Hastati .. I just don't see Hastati as being worth it at all, main thing about Rome is the Principes early on imo

I once saw a Barbarian Rebel army somehow raise 11-13 Rank 4 Units My legion in the area was barley able to beat them back.

look like im not the only one who's pissed at how DeI handle the AI, while we struggle to keep order in the newly conquered province,an AI with only 1 settlement keep coming in hordes of elite units. And that's on easy difficulty, and don't even bother razing their settlement, they will just build lvl 3 or higher building back up in just a few turns while it takes you years after years to reach that even with lots of money

Everyone, with the latest version I also have noticed a uptick in AI ability to field armies easily. I have played as barbarians and romans in a few campaigns. But I do notice that this AI OP does make the later campaign gameplay more challenging too???? I think DEI team are thinking that. We should let Dresden know about this thread, you guys have detailed quite a lot regarding the AI overpowerment etc. :) Excellent examples!

yes me too i noticed that ai is too op , i played DEI a lot before and i have never had so much problems with ai in older version of DEI. even in the beginning epirus with just one city is able to field so many armies that i cant keep up with them plus i have to fight a war with Etruscans
correction epirus have 2 cities

If you lower the difficulty the AI gets fewer armies, if you're finding it hard go lower. IMO the most fun difficulty is hard, but normal is also good fun
