A perfect example. An armored Chosen Axemen. Called: Oathsworn Axemen.
Also great mod!
Love playing it!
How influenced were you by this video? Seems you got 3/5 requested from here. What are your thoughts on the other two suggestions (Saxons above Germania and a Barbarian faction in north Italy that isn’t Gaul) for a bit more variety?
https://youtu.be/K1ZnXO2SRN0?si=OWsSTYYbI4otKQjZ
I know the video points out Etruscans didn’t survive til the game date, but Pharaonic Egypt obviously didn’t either, and Parthia obviously came about much later than the start date. Perhaps we can have Etruscans as a faction that can replace the Gaul/rebel settlements south of the Alps and act as a sort of Roman faction with barbarian influences that isn’t loyal to the Senate? Obviously that would take time but just a consideration.
There are other mods that aim for more realism and therefore more provinces etc.
Would you consider splitting the Britannia and Germania factions up a bit? Separating Celtiberia from Gaul was a great call.
On the one hand these factions have always bugged me in vanilla as they obviously didn't have anywhere near the level of unity the game gives them (yes you could say the same for many vanilla factions but these ones in particular seem most anachronistic to me). On the other hand, if they are split up I guess these regions would be significantly easier to conquer as there would be no concentrated resistance/pooling of resources. There is some logic in Gaul being semi unified given that Vercingetorix was able to form a confederation/alliance of tribes under his command, even if that was a lot later than our start date.
Perhaps the Britons could lose Belgica and a new small Belgae faction could take that area (this would weaken the crazily overpowered Britons and prevent that weird situation where julii meets Britons in central Gaul in the mid 3rd century BC). You could give the Belgae a new province on south Britain coast as well (reflecting that historic link). The extra Britonnic province wouldn't go amiss as well in terms of making that area more relevant in game terms.
The Germans are a bit harder to separate given both the fluidity of migrations in this region and the fact that the Romans' main encounters with them take place later on and hence our information about them from 3rd c. BC is so fragmentary. Notwithstanding that, my first suggestion would be to add the Cimbri to their believed historic homeland of Jutland (Tribus Saxones in the game). As we know they become a major enemy of Rome a century and a half later so it would be cool to see if the Cimbri could break out of their homeland and come downwards uniting more of Germania against the rising Roman power.
Secondly and perhaps getting more a-historic but the eastern part of Germania could become Suebia. The designation Suebi seems to have been a broader generalisation by the Romans to include German tribes east of the Elbe (such tribes as the marcomani I believe). I would not suggest making loads of individual factions representing each of the tribes as that goes too away from the vanilla experience and again makes them easy pickings (which we know from history they were not).
Summary:
- a new faction "Belgae" that takes Belgica and possibly a new south eastern coast province in Britain called Venta Belgarum.
- a new faction "Cimbri" to take what is currently called Tribus Saxones and possibly to split that province into two.
- a new faction "Suebi" to take regnum marcomannii (possibly split into 2) and possibly Boihaemum as well.
In all up to 3 new factions and up to 3 new provinces.
If there's any way at all that I can help please let me know.
A huge thank you for this great mod!
LEGEND
Historically, they triggered the Marian reforms, because they had steamrolled over consular armies and annihilated them at Arausio and other battles.
