Guide on how to use custom playermodels in Map Sweepers
By default, Map Sweepers does not support the use of custom playermodels, which is sorta a bummer considering Gmod's backbone is custom content, (though I do completely understand the dev's reasonings) however, there is a way to work around this through the use of other addons!

It's simple, you will just need "Enhanced Playermodel Selector" :
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2247755443

This addon allows you to open the playermodel selector through the console command "playermodel_selector". The addon overrides models that are applied by custom gamemodes, allowing you and others to see your custom playermodel!

However! You will likely notice that your c_hands are a bit, red and fleshy. This is due to Map Sweepers applying a filter over the c_hands which is intended for the default models, thus it'll look strange on your custom model, but fret not, there is a fix for this too!

All you need is "Need A Hand!":
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3347665507

By using the console command "nah_force_hands me" you will overwrite your c_hands with generated hands based on your worldmodel! (Also useful if you have a model that lacks c_hands, though it can create wonky ones otherwise). After this, simply enter a second command "nah_force_hands reset" which will revert your c_hands back to default and without Map Sweepers' red filter applied to them. You'll have to do this every run, but simply press the down arrow in the console to cycle through previously used commands.

With that, you can now sweep those maps in style! Get to it, J-Corp ain't paying you to loiter!

Have you made sure to reset the hands?

With Fesiug's Playermodel Selector (not the version in this thread), I can use my own custom playermodel without having to do any of the steps here for some reason, although the pre-round screen still shows the CS:S JCorp models for the classes
I do have to set the playermodel first in sandbox mode before going on Map Sweepers, however

Do you still have the red hands filter applied on your C_Hands? For me using that version is operating literally the exact same as the edit I have listed here.

Yeah

Then I don't see how that changes anything, even with that version of the playermodel selector, it operates entirely the same.

so he just goes and disables the ability to change skins

It was never added in the first place rather than disabled. Sandbox is a gamemode that specifically allows you to select a playermodel, but when you create a new gamemode from scratch, this feature is not available and must be implemented manually.

Also, try to go out there and count how many gamemodes you know actually support playermodels, you'll be surprised that it's basically none. Because it's pretty much a cancer feature with how players typically use it, actively detrimental to the gameplay of most gamemodes.

"It's a cancer feature"
Sheesh dude-

There are more reasons against, than in favour, yes.

Primarily, in a gamemode this fast where colour and silhouette recognition matters, it leads to situations such as this:

Imagine you were playing TF2 and a friendly medic was actually a demoman with a medic skin (or, worse, a completely random anime playermodel). Would be pretty awkward, wouldn't it be?

Moreover, when you select your own playermodel, *you* of all people never get to see it (apart from maybe hands, or when you're dead), but *other* people get confused and can't know what class you are, therefore what role on the team you have. Admittedly that's not super important, but seeing a Sentinel gives me a lot more useful information than seeing Hatsune Miku

Also, if we go case-by-case:
- In singleplayer PM literally does not matter. You could get an addon that changes it but there's like 0 practical reason to use it, as it's something you never see.
- In a friend group, this has marginal benefit of being able to tell who's who, assuming you know who your friends would pick and assuming no one would have the same playermodel, at expense of not being able to tell classes at a glance. This is, again, something that a separate addon allows you to do, it's your server so you can afford to install it.
- On a dedicated server this is purely a hindrance. You know nothing about people using them, it messes with your target recognition, takes away class recognition, and you're forced to put up with that. For the player who's using a custom PM this is also purely a negative because now there's a higher chance someone will friendly-fire them. And more likely than not, this will just bloat server content size, because if there are custom playermodels then there can be 10 gigabytes of them (considering modders these days and complete lack of texture compression or model optimization). Oh, yeah, and on that last bit -- an unoptimized model could very well lag your game into oblivion without your consent. Take Hellghast NPC faction for example, that addon lags *purely* because there are so many high-quality models. Not the AI, not anything else, it's the *models* slowing down your computer. Playermodels could very well promote the same issue.

Pros:
- Playermodel yay (?).

You can just say you don't like other people on your server having playermodels, you sound like the very concept hurt you personally
MerekiDor  [developer] 21 Oct @ 12:04am
Notice how there's nothing of substance you can say in defense of having playermodels while I listed the exact reasons they're bad.

And, again -- it's not like I went out of my way to code custom playermodels out even if you're using other mods. I simply did not add them and really don't wanna bother doing that. Those who *do* want playermodels may as well use other addons. What's not to understand?

Because this is such a non issue that is not worth fighting over. This isn't a competitive shooter, I really would not give one if someone killed me because they couldn't tell who I was. It's GMod, it's a mod about shooting npcs, it doesn't need to be taken so seriously
MerekiDor  [developer] 21 Oct @ 12:13am
I do agree. It is a non-issue. Everyone who wants to use a playermodel can do so by installing extra addons, and has been doing that since day 0 because it really is *that* easy. Just like anyone who wants a handheld railgun or a whole arsenal of tactical weapons can easily install extra addons. What I don't understand is why do people constantly suggest that to be a base-game feature when it really doesn't have to be.
