Did you try disabling or uninstalling other mods to avoid errors? That seems to be the only reliable way to keep that from happening.
As for the dialogue, I'll work on it in further editing. Thank you for the feedback.
1. Yes, I wrote the story myself.
2. Events from the previous year either happened differently or not at all.
3. I'm not sure how the weather in Volcaldera Bluffs works. It's January when Snoot Game starts and you don't see any snow, so I assume they're past the coldest part of the year and it's warming up. It's not an unwarranted criticism and I don't mind nitpicking, I'm just honestly unsure how to handle the weather situation.
4. It's lean.
Glad you enjoyed it, and thank you for the comment. I'm glad you caught the ATHF reference. I kinda wanted to make the science teacher Carl's friend Dominic, so I'm using Carl as a placeholder for now.
I started brainstorming different ideas for fanfics earlier this year, and after finding Machine Maestro's Snoot Game With Voices series, I watched it over and over and decided I liked Anon more than Inco (having played Wani before playing Snoot). So I thought it would be cool to make an Anon x Olivia story.
When I found out via the Drama of VVurms mod that someone had already made an entire fanfic of Anon and Olivia I was disappointed at first. But when I found out that Receiver_K's fic is more or less just Wani with Anon swapped in, I decided there was nothing stopping me from making my own fic since I always had the idea of putting Anon in the same time frame as Snoot Game, with him showing up in January instead of September.
So far, I've held off on reading all of IWKTS (I've only skimmed parts of it) because I don't want to inadvertently copy K's writing style. This fic isn't inspired by anyone else's fanfics; it's all my own brainstorming different what if scenarios.
What if Olivia never met Inco and she was doomed to a fate somewhere between E1 and E2, and then Anon shows up? That was the original idea. But then I thought it would be interesting if Inco was there anyway, but ended up in a coma just to create uncertainty about if or when he'll wake up.
As far as different timelines, since this takes place three years after Snoot, Anon would've had to have been born threes later. Then the arcade event in Wani happens before Art Contest Blues, not after. And then Inco goes into a coma before Olivia ever has a chance to tell him what she's done. And then Iadakan never destroy's Olivia's paintings.
Also, the events of E1 happen almost the same, but with Ben instead of Inco. Even though people hate E1, I still like some ideas that are introduced, like Damien becoming increasingly frustrated by Olivia who is regressing further and further. I don't think Damien got near enough development in the base game when compared to, say, Naser who remains a devoted brother throughout Snoot. And I wanted to explore the idea of Olivia's regression being at least partially Damien's fault for not trying harder and essentially leaning on the human love interest to fix her for him.
So I guess the main inspiration is imagining what would happen if Olivia stagnated in her growth and was left without Iadakan and Inco to help free herself from her past, and then Anon shows up the same person he is in Snoot. It just seemed too obvious to not do, especially given the parallels between both characters who are both self-pitying introverts at their lowest point.
So I'm doing it first because it's free real estate as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks for the response, delighted to have read your insights.
I really enjoyed the different timeline and variations different from Wani in this fic, though it does reminds me of the plot in Snoot Game, which itself isnt a bad thing. Really enjoyed the side characters expanded upon, Damien and Liz especially as they have been really sidelined in vanilla. Even Kiara and Lunara, with their dynamic of Anon reminding me of Rosa and Stella to some degree.
Excited for future updates to the mod, though one little nitpick I saw, but during the scene where Anon got his foot runover by Olivia while arguing with Ben, he mistakenly says "Inco watch out" instead of "Anon".
No problem. I also think Damien and Liz don't get enough of a role in the base game, especially considering there is depth to their characters. They're just sort of forgotten about and set aside. I actually went back and wrote an additional scene with Anon and Liz in one chapter because I worried I was starting to do that myself and the dynamic she has with Olivia ought to be explored further.
Snoot does a really good job of giving all the characters roughly equal weight in the story compared to Wani which focuses mostly on Inco, Olivia, and Iadakan.
And Ben saying Inco's name wasn't a mistake but intentional. It's force of habit that makes him call the human Inco.
I just finished it. I'm probably not going to 100% it or anything because I just like being happy and I think I'm on the best route right now. I'll say for sure, this is very well written. I enjoy these versions of Liz and Damien. I found Liz and Anons interactions to be sort of refreshing? They could be good friends. I feel a little bad for Inco all things considered. He wakes up and his cousin's dating his qt gator gee eff? Brutal. By the way, memes aside, is Inco actually related to Anon in this timeline? There were a lot of pointed comments about Anon having no family in town etc. I don't know if it'd be any consolation to Inco since he appears to be losing his based green schizo waifu, but it might be kind of nice to see Anon and Inco hanging out like the brothers they never knew they needed. Of course, it seems to me that Inco is effectively dead as far as the plot is concerned. Jackass, what kind of goober overdoses on cough syrup?
...the one who's effectively a orphan I guess. Damn, I'm being needlessly harsh on Mr. Nito.
Thanks for not slandering the ♥♥♥♥ out of Anon's parents by the way. I appreciate that despite being very flawed guardians, Anon still has many fond memories with them, and it never feels like they're one dimensional villains like in 70% of all the fanfics I've read.
Anyway, as per the norm, another certified Dude_84_Dude classic.
Oh and I shouldn't slack. All the side characters are great, Lunara, Kiara, Buster, and even Ben. You're very talented but I never 100% jived with your choice to portray Ben as effectively and incurable and remorseless psychopath. I guess it just flattens him out to me for him to simply be 'bad by nature' as much as I enjoy that trope in other media, particularly when he gets attention in the main game as still being somebody who may experience the world somewhat normally (though with the medicinal handicap). I thought it was very interesting to watch him seemingly grapple with himself after his demonically evil ♥♥♥♥ up at the Winter Formal. I liked the parallel that Anon drew between himself and Ben when it came to the public spectacle of the presentation in the auditorium, it's neat to see little nuggets of empathy like that even for somebody who everyone seems to hate with pretty good reason. E4 Anon ftw!
I feel pretty bad for Inco. Idk if he's just too bland of a dude but I feel enjoy Anon/Olivia quite a bit, and Anon in general is just a more entertaining character to puppeteer for me. That probably reflects kind of poorly on me, but oh well.
You've inspired me to do some writing of my own, so thank you for that.
Thank you. Glad you've been enjoying my mods. I'm not entirely happy with my first one though. That could've been better, not just in programming but writing. I know it has a mixed reception.
I enjoy writing Liz. She might be my favorite character from Wani, and I don't think she got enough attention in the vanilla game. I have more interactions between her and Anon in the most current version which will be in next month's update.
I had no plans to make them related. I have no idea if it's canon that they're related, I think it's just fan speculation. I did have plans for him though.
I didn't know fanfics wrote his parents as villains. I don't why anyone would. Anon's dad went out of his way to set up his son in a new school, and even lends him his old tux. Seems like he cares in his own way.
I speculated that Ben has some form of psychopathy in the analysis I wrote. I know the game doesn't divulge what exactly his problem is, other than that he takes anti-psychotics, which could be a variety of things. My current working hypothesis is that he has severe bi-polar disorder and the medicine he takes to even him out has the side effect of inhibiting his capacity for empathy. I haven't looked into any fan speculation as to his condition, I've just been guessing, probably incorrectly.
I want him to have a redemption arc in the long run. I received good faith criticism from another fanfic author saying there was no way Olivia would ever go to the Formal with him. I admit I wrote that out of convenience in order to get the most out of that E1 asset. I've since asked Sebek, my partner in this creation, to make a new asset that will make more sense. In the revised script, Olivia does go the Formal but by herself. And Ben simply gets an embarrassing photo of her.
I'm also rewriting and editing other parts to make the whole thing better as per some other criticism I received from the same author. It will make the final product better and more tightly written.
A lot of people find Inco bland compared to Anon. I don't know if Cavemanon were trying to play it safe with a more accessible protag than Anon, but he's just not as interesting. He should've had more flaws than just being simple and naive.
I'm flattered you've decided to try your hand at writing because of me. I must warn you, it is quite difficult though. I've been writing off and on since high-school and throughout my adult life, and one thing I can tell you is that it's harder than it looks. It's easy to get swept up in your own creative process and believe your creations are better than they actually are. This is why learning to self-edit and accept criticism are vital for always improving at writing, otherwise your ability will stagnate.
Just keep that in mind. Don't ever be content with your current skill level in writing, or anything. And if you receive too much praise, seek out criticism. Good luck.
As someone who like Inco a bit more than Anon. I dont think he is a bad or a super bland protaganist, I think he just needs a little bit more development. Him being home alone with very little contact with his parents could lead to some interesting character development and how it affected him and Olivia, but I feel Cavemanon didnt really have time nor the reason to flesh out his background.
In fact from what I remember, Cavemanon said that Inco is supposed to be a stand in for a perfect consoomer without a personality and trying to fit in, and was raised by other external factors. I sorta get what they're coming from but I dont think it excuses his more lack of development, and to be fair, most of that development went into Olivia.
With that, I dont think making Inco a carbon copy of Anon is a good solution, he just needs a bit more oomph in his character, I like his time when he seems unfocused, and while it played out for laughs, it could be more integral to his personality. But Im not sure how to proceed further in talking about Inco's character
I tried playing into that with my first mod, Don't Wani, and how his isolation at home was leaving him feeling frustrated and unwanted. That said, I don't think Inco's parents are bad, just misguided and materialistic. Inco is independent at least, but spiritually empty, which I was trying to highlight with that mod.
I wanted to show him struggling with growing narcissism, since that's what he becomes in E1, they just didn't bridge it enough throughout his story. I want too far in places with the first edit though and had to dial back at lot of the edge.
That was the conclusion that I came to when I wrote my analysis, that he's some normie NPC at first. I actually think they do too good of a job with their portrayal of him like that. His character arc is more fascinating than he himself as a character, if that makes sense. I hate both him and Olivia in E2 and feel almost zero sympathy for either of them.
I think Cavemanon ended up getting tunnel visioned with their development of Olivia and Iadakan while Inco himself is treated like chopped liver, which frustrated me the more I thought about it. I think he's gets shafted kinda hard and is treated as less important than Olivia, whereas in Snoot Game, Anon and Fang are both given equal importance. Inco is doomed to simp for Olivia by design and she never faces any real repercussions for her actions beyond hypothetical ones.
Also, I don't think Inco should be a carbon copy of Anon either, I just prefer Anon. That said, I think Inco does have a little bit of Anon in him. E3 of both games are surprisingly similar in that Anon and Inco become very protective of their love interests to the point of jealously guarding them from their respective antagonists. Inco is actually interesting for once in E3. That's my favorite iteration of him.
I've been doing my best to make Anon as true to how he's written in Snoot Game while thinking of up ways to push him and Olivia together, though there will always be purists who are impossible to please. Our next update will (I hope) do a better job of showing Anon and Olivia growing closer together.
It does make me feel with all the development on Olivia, and less focus on Inco, which I have a hunch he was rushed out, it could be interesting if Olivia was the main protagnist of the game instead of Inco, making choices as her sounds much more better than making choices for her as someone else.
I do think Cavemanon has a writing issue, I played both Snoot Game and Wani, and there are a lot of criticism/nitpicks I have about both of them so far, I have yet to complete all of their endings, (got E4 for both of them). I won't say a lot but there are weird writing moments like forcing Naomi to be a villian and getting her comeuppance despite not being actively malicious throughout the game. I came to the conclusion that while both Snoot and Wani have their moments and are solid stories, theyre still very flawed ones and not really "peak storytelling.".
I rambled enough anyways, Im glad you are close to finishing the mod and Im looking forward to seeing it. Ive seen some criticism for the mod such as "the chracters dont act like the way they act" and others but I have a hunch some aren't in good faith.
That's inevitable with any fanfic as I've learned, and I think they're just being contrarian.
I saw a thread on reddit of Reciever_K arguing with someone who was criticizing his portrayal of Anon in IWKTS. K said fanfic readers have a tendency to compare someone's portrayal of a character to a fanon version of that character.
Or in other words, they'll focus on one character trait and extrapolate that character's entire personality from it so that their benchmark is a Flanderized version of said character.
One of the stupidest criticisms I've read of my own writing is iNcO dOeSn'T sWeAr! even though he actually does swear a few times, even going as far as calling Mia a ♥♥♥♥♥. So that's false. Inco may be milquetoast, but he's not THAT milquetoast ffs.
Accurate portrayal of a character means taking a holistic approach, not writing them as one-dimensional Flanderizations. To that end, I tried to incorporate aspects of Inco and Olivia seen in all endings, not just E2.
Feels good to get that off my chest.
Well it is Reddit after all, which reminds of one thread of some GVH fan trying to glaze the game and say its a "complete product" compared to SG writing 2 novels worth of nothing. Bleh. Dont bother trying to read it, its just nitpicking over unnecessarily detail and saying KO_OP is better than Cavemanon for some reason.
