First snail is a higher level and has more HP, but it shouldn't be immortal or anything. Your mods are probably multiplying its stats or something, because I have played through it many dozens of times. And no one else has mentioned it either. So, yeah, probably your mods doing something. Or at least, it's something on your end.
This mod is really meant to be played by itself (with perhaps an imported higher level party).
The dungeon editor says the snail should have about 400 HP. I have no idea what happened on your end. Again, I've never had a problem with it, and no-one else has mention this. But if that snail is that tough, you might not even be able to beat the mod if some of the other monsters get similar buffs. Don't know how to help. Sorry.
The life crystals are coded to only activate after the player has passed certain points. Basically, the player has to 'earn' the access to the crystal.
Sorry to disappoint, but those aren't bugs. They're altered secrets!
