Core Subsystem Research
I've tried to research a couple of the Core type subsystems (Engineer, Defender, etc.) however when I do, it rarely seems to give me an upgraded version of the one I researched.

For example if I research 5 rare Engineer core subsystems, rather than giving me an exceptional Engineer subsystem, it would be an exceptional tier Defender subsystem.

Is this intended? I am finding it pretty difficult to get a hold of exotic/legendary tier versions of ones I'm looking for.

Can't say it's intended - but that's how researching works for single type of upgrade.
It rolls a random seed, which turns it into a random subsystem of that type.

Researching was not changed in any way here, so we're stuck with that.

Yeah, hunting for the best rarity will be blessed or cursed by RNG.
I think your best chance is still checking Repair Docks, and marking those that have any exotic/leggy for later.
