Kinda bug of pandorans evolution.
Have been restarting my campaign and rage quited during one of the missions. After that launched the game again and created a new campaign. But after discovering a first lair I get a message that pandorans have got invisible tritons, carapaced shield beares and shooters, hunter tritons, fliers, myrmidons and a few other variants as well. Basically everyting I have encountered in previous game.

Sorry that I haven't made a screenshot but checking files and starting a new game had fixed it.

And I have a few questions about pandorans progression. How does AI chooses which variant to unlock. Usually it presents the mist triton and MG athron, but sometimes it presents me with a carapaced athrons, It's the first upgrade btw.

Also I have noticed that in one games they evolve slowly while in others they have armor piercing and viral weapons when I only have equped my guys with gauss weaponry and only started to research armor. In all of those games I did exactly the same thing, saved all the havens, immideatly destroyed all lairs as well. What can lead to that inconsistency?

AFAIK chosing what specific evolution is triggered is RNG. Sometimes I fight Triton with Deimos AR since day 9, others is an Arthron with evolved pincer...

Pandorans get evolution points through alive colonies and infested havens, and also there are Void Omens affecting the evolution, like +50% research points but they evolve faster when losing missions, or building colonies 100% faster.

So early game it's a bit unclear, but depending on random location of mist emitters, except for the first one, those patches can create faster colonies or just not "touch" land quick enough and their bases are created later, it's my guess.
