A question regarding the possibility of enabling vanilla portraits in the mod
Is there a possiblity that you will unlock the vast number of vanilla species portraits as available in this mod? I'm not even talking about making any civilisations with them, simply enabling them for the randomly generated primitive civilisations. So the primitives aren't just all like these 4(?) humanoid portrait sets. I personally would appreciate a much larger diversity with these, especially when I set them the pre-ftl civilisation factor to like x3 or x5 so the galaxy can fill up with much more diverse minor powers that pop onto the galactic scene. Feels very Trek-like.

I mean no disrespect to the people working on this mod's sprites. They're doing amazing work with these sprites that help with making this mod feel downright like a professional product, it's just that I feel like I could like some more variety with the minor civilisation portraits. I understand how the swarm of various humanoid species is a major part of Star Trek's feel but it's not like more alien-looking species are a complete unknown in the series, especially in EU stuff or the animated shows that don't have to make everything easy to replicate in live action. The mod already includes lots of these either way.

As a side note to this, I think that specifically the inclusion of lithoid species portraits that could spawn as pre-ftls on Y Class planets, or other species spawning on methane worlds would also be cool.

If inclusion of all the vanilla portraits clash with the mod team's artistic vision on how to portray the Star Trek setting, is it possible to just include some non-humanoids? Or to make it an optional galaxy creation setting to toggle the vanilla portraits on and off (this feels like a easily doable thing to put together but I fully admit that my modding knowledge is rather limited). Or possibly a simple submod addon?

To be honest with you, probably not. Most vanilla portraits do not fit within the humanoid mesh we use for our uniform and clothing system.

That said, I do plan to add more random species portraits, and to expand the in-game primitive species portraits with their show-accurate look. See the Capellans for a recent example of this.
