Oh my days is that event a killer! Even days after it my hearthlings still feel the effects. Has anyone found a good way of tackling it?

First time it appeared I was one month into a game and everyone died after it (starvation, then a goblin attack)

Second (and current) time I survived, but all my hearthlings are hurt, frostbitten and they keep generating the white out condition and move painfully slowly. How do I stop this?
