A Phenomenal-looking Map Ruined by Terrible Gameplay
The Great Stuff

This is easily, without a doubt, the most graphically impressive map I have ever seen on the workshop. The amount of detail crammed into each environment from the city block, to the Ant-lion tunnels, to the museum, all the way to the combine base is astonishing. You can definitely tell that the creator really wanted to push the limits of the source engine with this map, and it definitely shows. This map is absolutely perfect for scenery and camera work if that's what you're looking for. However, if you downloaded this map primarily to explore the Story-Adventure side of it, then you will be extremely disappointed.

The Terrible Stuff

To put it simply, and in the nicest way possible, the enemy layout is completely abysmal and horribly disorganized. Instead of being strategically laid out around the map like in Half Life 2, combine soldiers will constantly pour out from force fields one after another. Because of this, you are going to hate every combat scenario involving combine soldiers since they will endlessly spawn for an extremely long time, which only gets worse as you progress through the map.

This wouldn't be nearly as unbearable if half of these shootouts didn't take place in areas where there is hardly any reliable cover whatsoever. This essentially means that you will spend half of your time hugging a random corner and spamming health packs while you get bombarded by 8 shot-gunners and 5 hunters simultaneously. This is a common problem I notice in a lot of Story-Adventure maps when they aren't properly play-tested, since some creators will spam thousands of enemies within a single location and don't really consider how the player will be able to effectively deal with them without having to chug a bunch of health packs (don't even get me started on this map's "boss fight.") It's important to space out the enemies and strategically place them in sensible locations so that even when ambushed, the player is able to get the upper-hand if they play their cards right. I shouldn't have to constantly spam health packs while being cornered by combine elites for 10 straight minutes. It becomes tedious and infuriating extremely quickly.

Conclusion/TL:DR

If you are looking for a map to use for posing and scenery, then this map is for you. The extremely detailed environments are legitimately mesmerizing and will keep you immersed. The creator did a fantastic job with the map design. However, if you are more interested in the Story-Adventure counterpart, then you will be less immersed and more mildly annoyed than anything. Even then, I still hope the creator plans to make another map like this in the near future but with some of the balancing issues being fixed.

Very true. A beautiful map, but I found myself crouched at the end of a hallway whittling down soldier after soldier not once, but twice. It was not fun at all. Hell, the final fight had me standing outside the teleport shotgunning every elite that came out every few seconds. Confusing and frustrating. Still very pretty though.

yeah sad to say alot of HL mod or gmod maps are like this too
