Description
Table salt! Where would we be without it?

Common as dirt in this modern day and age (and for this mod's purposes, where it's derived from), in olden times it was actually a highly sought after commodity not generally available to the masses. Those who were of lower social/financial status, or weren't lucky enough to live near salt water or places it could be mined, were either stuck with bland food or creative alternatives.

Seeing as how this fundamental ingredient for making most food either delicious, or at least palatable, was missing from the game, I wanted to add it as a resource.

You will be able to gain salt from the Saltbush, which is actually a real life plant that extracts sodium and other minerals from the soil and stores them in its leaves that can then be used to season food. The harvested saltbush leaves can then be ground at the Grinder.

The Saltbush will be automatically discovered by a random survivor after 1 month of game time, and prefers Clay soil, but will also grow well in Silt and Sand. Grows poorly in Loam and Gravel.

Lukeh_ro's Flour mod is a required prerequisite. Also, as there are no dedicated food recipes in this mod, it's highly recommend you download my Updated Food Recipes mod which greatly utilizes salt.

To do list:
  • Incorporate it as a naturally spawned plant to be discovered and observed like any other, rather than using a triggered story bit.
  • Fix the story bit UI notification that's still using "small broadleaf bush".
  • Incorporate it into additional recipes that are sensible. For food, it will be via the Updated Food Recipes mod. For non-edibles, likely internally.

ah ok, i dont have that much experience with the game, and am still relatively new to it but i play some more to get more experience first :)

I'd pondered that. I don't want to incorporate it with drying racks so as to overly impede with creating dried meat in the very early game, since it does take a little time for the saltbushes to grow and produce. That and drying meat in real life doesn't require salt, unless you're curing it.

However, I can incorporate it into the various "preserved meat" recipes that exists in the OET and Jaggid mods.

I'm all ears on other suggestions to incorporate it more in the game as well. :)

hi i wonder if Salt could also be used as a way of preserving meat for longer?
