Not Just For Looks

Description
So I always thought it was a shame that all the fancy DLC variant blocks didn't increase block power in some way shape or form. Needs to be fair for everyone, I know. But I want these fancy looking blocks to actually be fancy. And this mod does exactly that!

I went through the various DLC packs and grabbed thrusters, cargo cans, batteries, etc... anything that was just a visual update to an existing block that had a function - and I buffed the stats. The names of all the buffed blocks remain the same for the most part, and the blocks themselves do not change. All this mod is doing in changing some data around. So if you install the mod, your DLC blocks won't vanish. And if you remove the mod, your DLC blocks still wont vanish.

Ok, so what did I actually do...
  • Any block with the prefix Upgraded is more or less a x2 version of its base game counterpart
  • Any block with the prefix Advanced is a x3 version of its base game counterpart
  • Component costs were doubled for x2 blocks and tripled for x3 blocks
  • A Superconductor tax was added to all impacted blocks (10 for large grid, 5 for small)
    • You will need some gold to get your upgraded blocks
  • Various stats like thrust, cargo capacity, refine speed, etc... were either x2 or x3
  • All blocks got a durability buff with the added components
  • For weapons, damage was not increased
    • Weapons do benefit from increased durability and internal cargo space though, so they last longer and can shoot more if they get disconnected from your cargo grid
    • Turrets specifically got a small range buff
  • For ore detectors, the range increase made some assumptions
    • The ranges on these assume you have already buffed up the base ore detector
    • If your base LG ore detector has a 1km range, and the SG one has a 300m range, this update should make sense
  • Thrusters were figured out a little differently
    • Thruster material cost was increased to 2x and 3x base thruster cost for upgraded and advanced respectively
    • The thrust values were set by attempting to sort out the thrust to mass ratio. Upgraded thrusters should have roughly 2x the thrust to mass ratio of vanilla thrusters, and advanced should have roughly 3x
    • Prototech thrusters still have the best thrust to mass ratio for ion thrusters

Below is a list of the impacted blocks. As more blocks come out, ill add them to this mod! I was also dealing with a lot of blocks here, so please leave a comment if any of the numbers seem off!

Quick heads up on compatibility:
This mod is altering base game blocks. So it can potentially conflict with other mods that also alter those same blocks. If you notice this happening, your mod load order matters!
This mod will continue to function just fine if other mods are "taking control" of one or more of the blocks being adjusted here.

I found a thing :steamhappy:.....The large lab O2/H2 generator has been upgraded But the small block version has not. Don't know if this was intentional or just missed but thought I would point it out. Loving the mod keep up the good work.

Thank you for the feedback, and enjoy!

Exciting! Idk why I didn’t think about just increasing the thrust more lol. Good idea which also keeps them balanced. Excited to play around with it some more! Thanks again!

Just pushed a thruster balance pass update. Details in the change logs, and description.
I havent had a look at power/fuel costs just yet. I think thatll need to be a part of a larger update across all of the blocks. Ill add it to the todo list though.

@maxdean02 ya know, you make a good point 🤔 And a fair suggestion. Ill take a look at this over the weekend and push an update!

So I've been playing around with the mod for the last couple days, and I have a suggestion.

The upgraded thrusters provide twice the amount of thrust of the standard thrusters, BUT because of the double component cost, they weigh twice as much. This makes them barely an upgrade because the weight counteracts the thrust.

I would recommend changing the component costs for the upgraded variants, maybe even just for the thrusters. I would keep the component costs nearly the same, but increase the amount of superconductors, or other expensive components. Maybe atmo thrusters could require double the amount of motors and metal grids, while ions require double the amount of thruster components? I feel like some sort of tweak like this would keep the weight down so the thrusters remain useful.

Let me know what you think. Thanks for the mod still!

Love the mod.
New to the game and was seriously struggling finding good uses for the Base Game versions. Now feels like there's some element of progression.
