[The Boring Preamble]

I didn’t plan on making this initially, since all I wanted to have at the time was just a crew member with some cool custom sprites. But after piling changes after changes to the sprites of that old mod (not to be confused with another Protogen mod) I eventually decided to turn it into a full fledged project, and get a bunch of ‘fun’ modding experience along the way.
/And so Redux was made/
Kept working on it bit by bit for a few months, and now finally got it to the point where I’m happy to push it over the finish line.
Huge thanks to Zailif_ the original creator (I presume, the name was in the old mod file), the Protogen Race Mod team of three people, and Zeeka, for having it preserved inside the old MacBook and not just deleting it, as most people would’ve done.

Features, in no particular order

  • Full Protogen Race Mod integration, weapons, blocks, armour, ship and more are now all taken directly from there instead of having a human placeholder (Note: the mod is now required, both races will be selectable);

  • Numerous changes to the sprites, clipping pixels galore, no longer hovering 10cm above the ground, hands and male torso also got a pass for vanilla clothing compatibility;

  • Implemented female torso sprites, vanilla clothing compatible too;

  • Ship locker now contains a Vanity Legwear piece to hide humanoid pants (I’m not redrawing all of them), inadvertently contributing to the ever growing number of redundant invisible-clothing items in your crafting menu (craftable at hands);

  • Ship locker now also contains a gladius-style sword from this mod at game start, craftable at T2 Anvil;

  • Tail cosmetics you get at game start are now craftable at T2 Spinning Wheel (why isn’t it called a Sewing Machine by that point? or is i…)

Post Scriptum

Since the old mod as far as I know is “abandonware”, and for a time even disappeared, I would like to mention that you’re also free to use, work on, or change this mod however you like, it’s free to do whatever with, just like the original.

Revision 2 Update Development Notice:

  • To bring the mod as close to Starbound's artstyle as possible, I'm re-drawing left leg sprites again, now to be the same in looks as the right leg ones.
  • If you preffered the old sprites more I'll be leaving their files in there as well, but you'll have to make your own reskins in that case (could use any of the "affixed tail" mods for that as a base), as I'd rather not maintain 12 different reskins at once every time I make changes to the body sprites.
  • Drawing progress is going very slowly, so planned relase date on it is "when it's done", but I thought I'd still mention it just so that people are mentally prepared for when it does drop.

Enjoy

@DuskDragonNight75 Copy-paste the entire error here, because there's not much to go off from what you've posted. About 4 messages down you can see how to access the game logs with said errors.

it keep's crashing, throwing an error about protoshipsupport or something, and I'm pretty sure its tied to this mod. Whats causing it?

All I did was add all the patches from Omeruin's Detailed Race Template with the species name swapped where necessary, and evidently I did miss something in there since the bounty system borked.

Ok, so update on before, I have talked with the other protogen mod dev via their comments section and their mod doesn't have support for bounties yet which has been confirmed.
They said they can add it but are currently unsure how to, have sent them a forum post I found on this but maybe you might be able to help them?

I'll have to get back to you on that since it was in a friend's universe save using my modpack collection. If I spot another bounty quest with a protogen, I'll check the logs immediately as I attempt it.

But yeah @Novie if it was a bounty then that was my fuckup, since I have a patch in there to add the species to the rng list and the other mod afaik doesn't yet.

Inside "\Starbound\storage" in your game files there's a log (or "\Starbound\logs" folder for OpenStarbound). I'll need to see the errors what quests throw in there to know what's actually broken. If you were to close the game right after the encountered bug, relevant messages should be right at the bottom of it.

Alright, also noticed some issues with yours or the other protogen mod required for mod integration with bounty quests. For some reason none of the quests have spawned the protogen npc properly for any bounties so far. I've had to abandon each one I come across since cannot complete them. Any chance you might be able to look into this?
I've got this and the other mod installed alongside the disable the selection of the other protogen mod so am unsure if something's just broken right now.

I really wanna do it, problem is it's a lot of bother with all the dialogue writing and quest scripts (pain), and I already have a bunch of projects I want to complete first, so gotta prioritise.
I'll give it another go when I get the time for it.

Ah, so update to my previous comment I did find author's response (5th March 2025).
It's a shame since they look really good even if it is just meant to be concepts, would've really loved to start out in some underground bunker.
