Report a translation problem
When overspawn happens it most likely has to do with other mods adjusting certain rates or a conflict, this isnt a bad thing but you simply gotta go to the discussion page, find the Guardian tags, and tone spawnrates down a little for each guardian.
Example of the line of code you need to add:
DinoSpawnWeightMultipliers=(DinoNameTag="Shiva",SpawnWeightMultiplier=0.1,OverrideSpawnLimitPercentage=True,SpawnLimitPercentage=.01)

had it on my server for a few days and there are literally dozens of each guardian type spawning. Is there a way to limit them to a max of, say 5 of each type?

Yes, they are always level 600, but what you can do is change their resistance and damage taken.
This means changing a couple numbers will change them more then enough to suit your server and dino strength.

KingG, the most is 99% working, the guardian bow however cannot be made due to what you pointed out, otherwise it's fine
Even when I spawn in the forge with admin commands you cant place it.

Hey, here to tell you that I have adjusted the Spawnrates en Entyweights on the Guardians and a lot of polishing.
I invite you to try it again and see how you like it now.
On servers you need to do a WildDinoWipe atleast once a day, if you do that, then you should be good.

The Guardians will attack back when they take a decent hit, most attack right away
and some of the Guardians have a different AI making each unique and differrent.

As long as you dont remove or disable the mod you wont lose a thing.
If you simply disable the Guardian spawns after through the game.ini then you and the others keep all stuff gathered.

I suggest nerfing them untill you feel like they are just right for your playstyle.
