I created a shaman/conjurer so I cannot shot worth crap. When I got the pistol...I ran like hell! That turned out to be good. The items I found then were exactly what was needed for a shaman magic user. I will have to play again to see if another sort of character also gets items that are helpful.
Nice npcs. A good beginning for the character development. I hope you go further with this beginning!
@cheridan... i shot my way out in the escape, no problem.. ranged combat 4..killed every guard..
Thank you for the tip on the death screen suggestion I should leg it, I only had to die once before truly appriciating the valor of a retreat. I can't wait to see more!
Other than that, just wanted to say that I'm eagerly looking torwards the next update. Hope you're feeling better too. ^^
Thanks! I haven't played through The Clean Fire, though I've seen a lot of good comments about it so I'll take that as a compliment!
You're right about the player choice, as well as class/role options - those are fleshed out in the later parts. I wanted to allow for some choice in dialogue, but not much within the Prologue itself. My aim was to make the player feel like they were being railroaded with very limited options for progress, due to the story.
Balance-wise, you should be able to complete it with just about any build with the changes I included in 0.3.11 - with the base pistol + included abilities, there should be enough variety to get through. I thought it would be a bit painful, hence the medkits. :)
I'd completely forgotten about that yellow jumpsuit disguise - was looking through all of the stock outfits and gear, and derped on disguises being available. That's a solid idea, adding that to the list.
Keep the comments and feedback coming. Thanks again!
Glad you liked the start! That and the theatre bits took the longest to work out. The SRR/DF/HK editors are pretty strict when it comes to order of operations, so if things aren't just right, everything breaks in spectacular ways.
Re: the runner meeting, that's one section that I wasn't entirely pleased with. I'm bouncing around a few ideas on how to improve the runner introduction there, and looking into a couple of story tweaks that may resolve the weaker points. Ditto with the ending theatre - admittedly, I'd gotten excited being that close to getting things done and implemented, and wound up falling a bit flat on the ending. Definitely will get some more polish and make it a bit punchier, especially once there's a smooth transition from there to Part 1.
About the guard -- Was just it the length of time that the character winds up not in control, or something else about it that broke the flow? I was curious if anyone would have an issue with that.
Thanks to everyone who's commented for all of the support, as well. It's rough and nerve-wracking putting something like this out for everyone to see, and it helps that the response has been so positive. I'm hoping to do a few more patches to the prologue before I lock the files down on my end to build out Part 1, so I'll be doing tweaks here and there probably through the end of next week while I finish pre-pro, writing, and blockouts for Part 1. I'll be staying active on here as well, doing my best to respond to feedback and comments in a timely manner.

It's been a few years since I read 2XS, I remember enjoying Montgomery's private eye background in that one. Solid novel. Thanks! :)
[And because Steam won't let me comment in more than 1000 characters, this will be a multi-post.]
I statted out a rigger and ended up doing no rigging during the prologue. That doesn't surprise me because, again, it's just the prologue (and anyway, I dropped a few points into ranged combat, so it's not like I couldn't do anything ), but I'm hoping the full game accomodates the full gamut of character types.
If I could throw in one idea? It seems a little odd for the player character to start out wearing body armour when they're just an ordinary schmo. While this is easy enough to ignore, maybe sticking the character in the yellow jumpsuit "disguise" would help sell that they're a minimum-wage worker coming home from a day of work.
I'd say the weakest part was walking with the guard. Took too damn long and broke off the atmosphere really bad. I realize there's an engine limitation with that but perhaps you can find a workaround.
Also that last line of dialogue with the dwarf was a bit of a stretch.
Will be waiting for new updates! Good job.
