I saw someone mentioning issues (albeit 3 years ago but it doesn't look like either mod was updated since then) with the other face paint mod by this author. Can anyone confirm if this mod causes crashes as well, or is it safe to use?

This may not apply to your mod, but I noticed the size for that file in your mod is large so please look into it.

I would love to have an option to change their color but there is none in-game, could probably be possible with the modding tools but I'm not that experienced. =)

very nice work.... some ideas to be your Muse Norse Symbols,from alien series ala Star Trek, DS 9, and Babylon 5... for example Trill markings Like Jadzia Dax (ds9) ...
