Atlanted, Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that originated in Japan in 2008. It is used for many legitimate purposes, such as forms of stock exchange. It can be acquired by either purchasing it from an online vendor, or "mining it". "Mining" is a process where you use your internet and your processor to process transactions. Due to the finite amount of bitcoin, instead of getting new bitcoin, you will receive a small portion of the transaction being processed. Some people go so far as to make a living off of this methood, and set up "mining rigs" to mine bitcoin fast. Due to the peer hosting of transactions and using wallet numbers as the only form of identification, bitcoin is commonly used in illicit transactions.
