It does work. Your nukes will kill you.
Only reason it might not work is if you have another mod overriding it, in which case you'd bring this one to the top of the list.

More difficult? What about all those times you need to exert superior shiply-ness to the lesser ships? Show them some real power! Or when you don't feel like waiting twenty minutes for a ship to detatch itself when it forms inside of you? I say this makes it easier >:)

I like friendly fire but it isn't good for testing in most tournaments sadly.
It'd fix the sentinels though if it was.
