there is probibly no point in makeing this comment but it would be cool to see this mod either redone or worked on to upadate it to be up to date, and maby as sabrewulf said make a smaller version.
Sabrewulf 14 Oct, 2017 @ 7:09pm
Hey Sektan, can't you make a smaller version?
It's too big and heavy for small ships, the hook weight 2.730 kg of iron
gea 21 Apr, 2017 @ 4:27pm
Hey, try changing the blocks to doors and use that to colapse them.
zekrom_vale 26 Jan, 2017 @ 3:32pm
Maby a megnetic hitch would be a cool idea.
EragonGame 26 Nov, 2016 @ 3:14am
nice

For the lack of a decent vehicle tow bar I tried using these but they just pull through and I think a bit on the oversize, even for large grid.
Cmdr. DoomForge™ 19 May, 2016 @ 12:43am
Any news on when (or if) this might get its size reduced to 1x1x1 or 3x3x3 for small grid? if it was 1x1x1, even 3x3x3, it would be almost perfect for my unsc elephant recovery vehicle build I've recently started work on.
[Andon] 30 Apr, 2016 @ 4:09pm
I've been playing around with these recently, and they work grand! I've crashed multiple ships trying to get these things to let go, and... Well, they haven't so far. The only issue I've run into is the catch blocks end up at weird angles sometimes, but I'm guessing that's a game collision issue.

I do think they are FAR too large for a small ship. A 3x3 or even 2x2 one would be fantastic.

Additionally, the visual models of the hook and catch blocks look a little off when they're hanging. The hook tends to clip into the catch a bit.

An update to these would be really cool!

So does it work? If it does this is definitely going to be worth it, but I don't want to end up wasting resources in my survival on this just to have it all break, but that's what creative testing is for so idk.
Lonewolf 18 Nov, 2015 @ 5:46am
Better now with planets. Really useful. :steamhappy:
RangerOfTheOrder 28 Sep, 2015 @ 7:17pm
It works, however you need to increase the durability to make high speed Grab n' Goes possible.
Hollowpointart 27 Sep, 2015 @ 2:43pm
Fulton extraction, anyone? :P
MattPlaysSimulations 19 Sep, 2015 @ 2:00pm
hi love this mod and have a really good use for it. i want to use it on all my ground vehicles so i can make a recovery vehicle using these. problem being, they are way too large on small ships. would it be posible to make a 1x1x1 version for small ships?
737✈Garrus 14 Sep, 2015 @ 9:19am
rounded collision mesh please
Pigeon 3 Sep, 2015 @ 12:24pm
have a closeable one
DruidicRifleman 27 Aug, 2015 @ 3:00pm
Yes but not till plannets IMHO

If you're looking for a gravity launcher for a carrier, there is a way... It's ugly, crude, requires a LOT of power and effort, but it does work. Well, when you don't smash into the walls because you forgot a gravity generator in a key position. Take your "Flight deck" and lace it with Gravity generators pointing in the direction that you want the small ship to launch. Like, several hundred of them, all a block apart vertically, so you don't wind up stacking them. Now, your fighter must be equipped with several artificial masses to make this work.
Now, the gravity generators should normally be off, all aligned to a specific group, named as you will and set them to a timer. After all, no one wants a premature launch, do they? We can control the fighter in various ways, but TURN OFF the inertia dampeners prior to launch, or this might work out not so good for your face.
Now, activate your timer and clench your butt-hole, because, done right, you will go FAST.

Something like this might be useful for an arrester(or?) system for carriers. Also, anyone figured out a way to make a gravity catapult for carriers yet?
M4kI9H7 11 Aug, 2015 @ 11:42pm
I think, It can sloped. ex: slope with hook, slope with catch

or else, Inv armor + hook, catch

or ellse~ spaceball with catch
Sev87 11 Aug, 2015 @ 2:01pm
@Evandir Archaic, maybe. Practical and idiot proof, absolutly. Helpful in moments of distress and the need of a quick improvised solution, hell yes.
Evandir 11 Aug, 2015 @ 12:31am
A hook and catch? Thats pretty archaic for space engineers, this would be something useful in medieval engineers though. @maweyatutean ikr I've been wanting cables for so long, I figured they would have done it by now considering the rope in medieval engineers
Jeffman12 10 Aug, 2015 @ 9:51pm
These pics are flooding me with memories of Metroid Prime 3.
Yannik_Sc 10 Aug, 2015 @ 4:00pm
Wow this is realy cool, i think this are just merge block but no :O xD
Walryck Aldelar 10 Aug, 2015 @ 5:59am
This game definitly needs to have cables :gordon:
DirectiveAthena 9 Aug, 2015 @ 5:31am
If someone could make a minigame withit it would be even more awsome
goof bug 9 Aug, 2015 @ 5:18am
Winches Totally:steamhappy:
Thicc 💀 Goblins 9 Aug, 2015 @ 4:30am
I would imagine it to be far more practical to use merge blocks instead. The only thing I can think of that could use this mod for a real purpose is to have a tug ship that is designed to move crates, ship components, modules, or land bunkers out of a factory, but a merge block would simply be much more stable and compact. Or just landing gear. :dwarven:
WillNutForADollar 9 Aug, 2015 @ 3:06am
For the people saying winches you could always use multiple pistons attached to the hook to extend it?
Visentinel 8 Aug, 2015 @ 8:04pm
I had so much fun with this. I used Enhanced Gravity Generators set to only large ships and use a small ship with the hook, this simulated a kind of planet gravity simulation and i had great time messing with hovering and moving things around.

The best fun was i setup a really good hover and spawned 500K gravel and when i dropped it into the cargo container on the catch side it pulled everything down into the platform and the carnage was great :)
Xefanro 8 Aug, 2015 @ 7:48pm
Cables and Eyelets, and Winches would be cool.
LeftyLucy 8 Aug, 2015 @ 7:14pm
Space Chandiler....
admiral_zeus 8 Aug, 2015 @ 4:11pm
if you make a winch for this it will work better like you can winch a ship if it is stuck with out worring about damaging your ship,
Jogan81 8 Aug, 2015 @ 2:38pm
COOL!! Now i can make removable parts on my ship and hang them up when not needed :D
Very usefull
Masterchef365 8 Aug, 2015 @ 12:19pm
... Space trains? This could be the hitch!
Weak1ings 8 Aug, 2015 @ 11:43am
These blocks are Kind of useful.
I like them a lot but their usefullness is limited by the fact they can glitch through each other when going faster than .2 m/s. Also, landing gear can serve to be better usefully. but catching onto a mothership would be cool.
Andyverse 8 Aug, 2015 @ 9:27am
@anthony use mergeblocks or connectors for that.
Andyverse 8 Aug, 2015 @ 9:27am
like, we have a big star shaped stationnear a planet
it's CoM is outside a planets gravity well.
i mean, bring a ship into position and then wait till the rotation of the station brings you the hook and then attach the smallship onto it.
You can now sit into the ship and wait a few minutes.
TADAAAA, youre outside of the planets grav well now xD
Thunderbolt 7 Aug, 2015 @ 5:22pm
However I think landing gears are better to use for that
Thunderbolt 7 Aug, 2015 @ 5:21pm
I think this will come in handy when they add planets to the game. It would make a great way to move cargo to higher floors on a building for construction purposes instead of walking back and forth. aka a crane.
A0 7 Aug, 2015 @ 4:52pm
Heres a youtube video of an astronaut explaing the grapple on the iss. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phq365RsJuY
Inventor based it off a camera lens. Hooks were impossible because the object will just bounce around dangerously.
Clonepilotz 7 Aug, 2015 @ 3:22pm
helps alot when u got to move salvaged ai ships
:steamhappy:
Derp & Junk 7 Aug, 2015 @ 1:43pm
Wow, now there's something I did not expect to see for this game. Love the concept, however, if this wiggles around like it looks like it should then won't that cause problems? Be interesting to try this.
kris220b 7 Aug, 2015 @ 11:28am
and how is having a 5x5 base anywhere near practical?
not all small ships are massiv you know
having a 1x1 version for small ships would be much more practical
( same goes for your retracteble stairs and ramps )
Sektan  [author] 7 Aug, 2015 @ 2:20am
@A0: show me picture
A0 7 Aug, 2015 @ 2:19am
hooks are a disaster in real life. Nasa uses a lens type grapple. We need a grapple.
Crimson0hn0 7 Aug, 2015 @ 2:11am
want in vanillia!
transbianyan 7 Aug, 2015 @ 1:57am
does this work with jump drive
Animal 7 Aug, 2015 @ 1:40am
A small version of this with a mechanical door pintle hook would be amazing for trailers and the like, which will be very very useful on the surface of planets
KilledJoy 6 Aug, 2015 @ 2:26pm
add merge block .... and boom.... detatchable nuke...

use the hook and catch... booom .... deliver your nuke the manual way... love it

ive blown holes in peoples ships delivered my bomb and left this is magic
GenJackO 6 Aug, 2015 @ 11:15am
i used that gears and things mod pretty succesfuly to make truely epic asteroid hanger doors but then oxygen came around and made them pointless wish there was a way to make moving blast doors airtight infact blast door edges should have an area on the edges that are airtight when pressed against other blocks
