Oh you also need to add the modifier, which is easiest to do by parenting the model to the bone. Joining the meshes causes you to have to redo the UV mapping so I just didn't bother and only had it in the same collection so it'd export as part of the same SMD file.

for the animations to work, yes. the model has to weighted to the same bone as the grenade. All I did was remove the grenade and replace it with the cube, then set the vertex group to the correct bone.

v_ models in the files refer to the viewmodels, by the way. Whereas w_ refers to the world models, which are for some reason different from the item models that you actually pick up.

just some simple 3d modeling work, I took the v_grenade model from the game and replaced the grenade part with a tnt block then ported it back into the game.
