I've found some fun results by setting all SI to zero except tank and witch. Witch ~50-66%, Tank 1%, 50 damage to survivor, and 33% chance survivor is damaged. This produces a nice variety of scenarios that balance risk and reward, and leave you second guessing your plans when you come across a rescue closet.

If you have 1 survivor to rescue, you're not gaining that much reward from opening the closet... BUT it is unlikely (33%) he will spawn downed, so IF (50-66%) a witch is in there, he will be able to quickly extricate himself before the witch is angered. With 3 survivors to rescue, you're getting the most reward, but at 33% chance for each one of them to be downed, IF (50-66%) a witch spawns and IF (50%) it is a sitting witch, it will almost certainly be triggered.

And on top of all that, you always have a 1% chance of a tank spawning in there lol, even if it is infinitesimally small.

@kouga thanks for the help man! The 'relentless witch' mod by Interneted really helps turn the witch into a team wiping threat like the tank. And the 'witch state randomizer' by Rise plus the 'witch gets angered by flashlights' mod by Geebanger0 allow this threat to come into play in more interesting ways, as the sitting witch is harder to run into but much easier to accidentally trigger, balancing the two witch states' risks to the survivors.

@ChapCanai Can you please explain how we change the settings? I've been trying to by
(1) extracting the mod in vpkedit
(2) opening the .nut file 'yeoh_infected_rescue_closet'
(3) I tried changing the values to other numbers between 0-100, and save.
(4) I dragged the extracted vpk folder over 'vpk.exe' to re-pack it.
(5) I placed the newly edited version in my 'l4d2/addons' folder.
(6) Test run, it never works.

Probably should exclude the Witch and Tank from being options to be spawned or at least made so they're the only thing that does spawn since these two are classified as bosses in both games in my opinion.

All this could be addressed by complimentary standalone mods rather than changes to this one, giving non-modding workshop users more flexibility. Except the door-witch-trigger, that would have to be a direct variation of this mod, and I have no clue how that would be done. Maybe add a percentage likelihood for the witch to receive a small amount of damage from the survivor that opens the door? Geebanger0 was working on a similar mod to this last year and tried that approach.

I'm trying to experiment with the percentages and see if I can find a right balance where it's still worth it for survivors to open these rescue closets, but only under the right circumstances and with some planning. Kind of like very miniature panic events themselves - especially with witch and tank a distinct possibility.

In the context of this mod, you could have up to three friends all locked in there - they would be afraid to call too loudly for fear of attracting infected, military extermination, etc. They might still die due to smoke inhalation, dehydration, offing themselves, plenty of causes (hence the percentage of them spawning dead). But otherwise they would alternate between quietly resting and attempting to jimmy the door lock, likely agreeing to do this in shifts. This would result in little sound except the rattling of a door knob. Then perhaps the awake one turns out to be not so immune after all - the other two might quietly wake to discover this, remaining as still as possible as the fevered special infected struggles against the door, or meanders the dark room (hence this mod's mixed spawning of a special infected with sometimes living and/or incapacitated survivors.).

I've often wondered what the canonical reason would be for people to be locked in those closets from the outside. I think they're supposed to be bit (but unknowingly immune) survivors whom friends/family could not bring themselves to put down, so they locked them in a room. Perhaps their family left a small amount of supplies, hoping to return with a promised anti-virus / cure from CEDA, only to quickly perish themselves. After all, the virus doesn't kill its hosts as often as it takes control, and a common infected isolated in a room with water is unlikely to sustain significant harm for some space of time.

True about the sillouettes (and I just confirmed the mod is compatible anyways for those that want it). Your right that banging sounds would be indistinguishable... maybe mostly audio for a rattling door knob would be best, I don't think anything else in the game makes that type of sound.

as for the other suggestions, i think the mod works pretty well with or without them tbh. having the door sound change to some door banging sounds would be neat but itd also be hard to distinguish i feel like. and the survivor silhouettes already dont give away whether you're gonna get an infected or not, so its not necessary to hide.

@PEACEandLOVE, thats right it IS really good with Locked Rescue Closet. in fact its one of the intended ways to play with this mod, the other is having Survivors Stagger out of Closets. should probably add that in "required items" :D

Also could you add a setting that causes a chance for the witch to be triggered by the door opening? Say, a configurable percentage chance for a witch to spawn, and configurable percentage chance for the witch to be either normal, or immediatly provoked by the door's opening?

Can you make a version that replaces the survivors' audio cries for help with something more ambiguous? Such as door knob rattling, and maybe some plodding footsteps or scratching sounds? That would make more sense, as it could plausibly be either a human or a special infected in the closet.
