Though it is true that through most of medieval history, the beauty ideal was fairly... childlike. Large, expressive eyes, small hips, petite, fair skin, etc. But just because a beauty ideal exists doesn't mean everyone will embody it. It's not like today, when people can literally get their faces altered to look like every other Kardashian clone. And towards the end of the era, going into the renaissance, beauty standards favored fairly plump women with wide hips... and not just in the nobility.

This has been your totally unsanctioned medieval history seminar. I hope you enjoyed it, or at least learned something.

Pies were very common during this era, but not the sugary treats we think of today. Meat pies were common throughout the world, including Lebanese Sfeeha, a recipe still used today... in fact, I've made it several times myself. But the majority of their diet was vegetables and grains, staple foods high in complex carbohydrates. In many ways, the medieval peasant's diet was more varied and healthier than our own high-sugar, high-sodium diets of today that offer little in the way of micronutrients while containing plenty of empty calories. So no... everyone wasn't a starving waif. But they weren't obese, either. Neither extreme is depicted in these pictures, though.

How the... these bodies are model-thin, not fat. They have visibly defined abs...

Also, the idea that medieval peasants were all perpetually starving is largely a myth. Same with the idea that they never bathed. Most households bathed regularly, and many households would keep pigs for lean seasons or chickens for daily eggs. Vegetable gardens were incredibly commonplace, and villagers would trade amongst themselves for the things they wanted. While large game like deer and boar was often reserved for the king, small game was often "fair game," hence the term, and fishing was quite common anywhere that had fish to catch.

these are the unedited models used by the game, i only changed textures
in the middle age, the people often had nothing to eat. So the women are never as fat as on your pics ;)
