It is possible, I've seen a video on youtube where a guy made an automatic shifting mechanism that takes engine rpm and uses centrifugal clutches to rotate a gear that pulls and pushes a rack gear 2-hole & slider x3 as they engage and disengage at set rpms and it made a 3 speed automatic transmission but I made my own based on it and made a 5 speed one, here I'm stopping writing this and rather wait for your questions or askings if you have any...

this is insane! ive never seen such a compact build. you should try making a golf R/GTI with the automatic DSG transmission, would be cool but im not sure if theres a way to make it work with rpm sensors
