Warhammer has a really cool version that improves the combat alot, but it also makes the exp required to rank up significantly higher slowing down the progress but making it feel more meaningful when they actually did rank up.

it also helped balance things because the AI could still rank up units with their in built buffs

i agree with Spadde a nerfed version would be awesome. Ai doesnt seem to be able to maintain veterancy so its really easy to beat them when your basic gold chevron archers can wipe out multiple armies.
