what you call "gay props slapped around and posted on the workshop" is an rgb model, it's really simple to understand. since you don't know what that is, i've attached an image for you.

have you heard of fog? and ambient lighting? also, everything you see in my screenshot wasn't made in a custom map, all of it was made in GM_construct in the dark room.
