about the performance part, valve developer community (aka valve wiki, aka the only place where you can get coherent source engine info) doesn't even state how expensive are dynamic shadows from shadow_control to render, so i actually don't know if the difference is big
i'd say it's hardware related and call it a day :P
though... looks?
ur sacrificing looks for fps
in what scenario would shadowless objects help the scenery look better. my only guess is for large dupes and such. no shadows would make performance a hella lot better?
