@Whiskers, they have their place (all armor has its place) but wood ends up the most HP per material- which is not good if you bunch it up because of the low armor value- but spread out, no matter how much is destroyed, the ship will float, and weapons designed for metal are often wasting damage from overpen or trading damage for AP which ends up unnecessary. Without water for the skips it provides, wood would be far less effective. And hey, I used applique for citadel lining against frags and HE. Each block has a purpose where it shines.
