Since the game starts in 1836 and the Mormon migrations didn't start until 1846, are there any events to help with population or resources that are incoming from the United States in the east?

Yes it has been updated! I will have to fix a bug with the religion being mormon instead of Latter Day Saint but other that that its all good! :D
