The part that gets painted was already white on the textures, so that made it quite easy to just make the alpha mask for the paintability to work.
On that item, it has a very noticeable paint region, much larger than this one. Painting Slate while on RED can be definitely confusing. I'm in no means attacking the creator if that was his choice in making it paintable, I'm just saying. And regardless of how much the paint changes in that item, I don't often see as a way to confuse teams.
There has been cases in the past of Valve making items paintable where it shouldn't (the Five-Month Shadow is a good example, just check the comments section, the author states that item was not originally paintable), as well the reverse (removing paintability despite being made by the creators).
Because of that I do think there's a responsibility for creators to not make cosmetics that could cause team recognition issues. The Water Waders + Flavorful Baggies is by far the worst and most impactful example most people know about and I don't get why the creator couldn't have limited the paint region to the shoes for example, or have the 2 paint areas separated to 2 different styles, at least now that the issue has been brought up.
Not going to mention anything regards to team recognition for this + equipped with others specifically. It looks fine to me, the paint area is fine, most of Med's Waterlogged Coat is kept, plus his gloves.
But I just want to say there's way worse combinations out there that makes teams almost indistinguishable, perhaps worse than the Water Waders combo people usually mention. I'm not telling what items and class, though, as I don't want to be responsible for that.
Just want to mention that people who want to cause team confusion WILL find a way to make hard to distinguish team loadouts no matter what. Plus, creators have no control on what items may be added to the game in the future. Their item may be fine, but someone's else may be added and make things hard to recognize teams, as you know, you can have three different cosmetics equipped (hat is optional).
Yes, it's okay to be worried about them, but personally I really don't see any problem for this item in specific.
Again, I do understand these are valid concerns, but, like mentioned, creators have no control of what it's going to be worn with, and neither what will be added to the game in the future. Despite getting rid of the Waterlogged Lab Coat arms, I believe this item has enough team colors to be able to distinguish it, even from behind.
All these problems could probably be resolved if Valve decided to add team-colored outlines for players (not the ones that goes through walls). Similar to how many modern games does, like Overwatch. Even if someone has the Water Waders set combo, you could see their outline being red or blue, and easily know what team they are on. This would elimate a lot of the problems and concerns about team recognition.
Aditionally, this would also resolve team recognition problems on maps that are too dark. Most launch-maps on this game were somewhat bright and sunny, but things did change over the course with Halloween maps and the such.
The Scrap Pack doesn't have any red parts unlike Emerald Jarate, and a Medic won't always be using his medigun.
But yeah maybe I'm a bit overly cautious when it comes to this specific Medic cosmetic.
The Water Waders/Flavorful Baggies combo could pretty much have been prevented if Valve gave Water Waders the same treatment as Warmth Preserver.
If you look at the Workshop page of Warmth Preserver, you can see in the preview images how it was originally supposed to have paintability. But as far as i remember, Valve told the creator to get rid of the paint region for that cosmetic.
@Corvalho
Yea looking this, this is barely considered a team recognition issue.
I don't find that to be the case at all, the thing with the medic is that his coat is brighter and way more noticeable than the paint area, I set up that cosmetic combination if you wanna have a look for yourself https://imgur.com/a/US0jS1X
Well you know who to blame for adding that paint variant to the game, along with the Pink/Lime ones. The Devs also didn't give content creators the option to disable certain paints for their cosmetics.
Also i don't see the Breakneck Baggies being used in one of the preview images. but even if it ends up being equippable with this cosmetic if it gets added, i think it would be a rather unfitting combo to use those two together.
And even if i came across a player doing this, i would already have known which team the Medic is on, thanks to their Team colored gloves.
I think then it would be fine
And i'm pretty sure new players will eventually recognize him by his design after a while.
Eh. i'd say the paint region on this one is fair enough. coulda been worse if it was the white or gold parts that were paitnable.
