I've seen unusuals with 3d. I have no idea how it's done to be honest, but I would really recommend it for this one. It would absolutely make the effect.

Sadly due to engine limitations, all particles in TF2 are flat images. Some hide it better than others.

The movement along the path of the ship looks incredible, but the ship being a flat image ruins it for me.
