nah---the BSP is the compiled map. hammer loads VMFs (or RMFs if you're in goldsrc), and is compiled into a BSP

oh i thought like bsp files are the map files you could just like double click and open hammer and edit them

valve still had the original map files when HLS was made, so they could just convert the maps to work without having to do a bunch of shit

i mean if it messes up the data then yeah its gonna suck to remake, but how come they could do it with hl1 source?

the main issue is the fact that goldsrc BSP's don't keep brush data in the same way source BSP's do. decompilers have to interpret the BSP data to recreate the brushes, and often times there are a plethora of issues that require you to remake the entire brushwork of the map just to have something remotely usable.

this issue doesnt exist when decompiling a source engine map, as the brush data is kept. its more work than i'm really willing to commit to

i dont know anything about goldsrc myself other then the basic half life and quake stuff but from what you said i.t seems like its just hard to do

if porting goldsrc maps wasn't an absolute pain in the ass i would definitely try
