You might reference the look of the early variant bolters and those used by chaos marines (that haven't corrupted the bolters but just use the early forms) as potential sprite inspiration.

This will bypass the caps set by vanilla Rimworld so that the gene enhancements will make them quite powerful.
I haven't tested against VOID so let me know how they go :)
