dialogue was meant for lore, but it turned a bit screwed up due to misinterpretation of dialogue
midget adults got mistaken for children
[kinda prefer the lore change, to be honest. monk lancer will probably be rewritten and retconned, thankfully]

Hey all, story and script writer here. I'd like to comment on the update to the Monk Lancer Five Pebbles interaction. So, the previous iteration of the dialogue is infamously regarded in the community as the 'slugpup pregnancy dialogue'. Since I haven't been nearly as immersed in the Rain World community for the past few years as I used to be, I wasn't aware of the backlash that it caused until topicular brought the issue up with me recently. It has now, of course, been changed to address the issue, but I would like to dissect the original dialogue to try and explain its intention and why such a glaring issue was overlooked.

To begin, the dialogue and hologram shown by FP were meant to reveal that lancers were actually an alternate stage in the slugcat lifecycle, where separation from a parent colony would cause an individual to never grow larger than a pup and instead develop the signature horn when it reaches adulthood. This is the method by which slugcats would establish new colonies elsewhere- when one colony reaches the carrying capacity of the area, newborn pups would be rejected and the ones that survived on their own would eventually find other lancers to mate with and start a new colony. This added context behind the lancers is not the issue. However, following this, FP makes a joke about ascending being a better choice for the lancer than "getting pregnant" because he doesn't want a slugcat colony starting on his territory. With the benefit of hindsight, I understand why this line was received so negatively and it's entirely my fault for not realizing how it seemed to the average player.

(Cont.) The tone of the Monk Lancer Five Pebbles dialogue in general was meant to be humorous, and the pregnancy joke the punchline, as a reference to silliness of the original Monk Lancer dialogue. There were three problems with this that I only realize now. One, I should have realized a single line of text identifying lancers as adult slugcats would not be enough to dismantle the perception of lancers as pups. The Lancer mod had had a long history to that point of being marketed as 'playable slugpups', and of course the lancers look like slugpups. While in my mind I viewed lancers as dwarf adults, I didn't consider that the community still had a very strong association between lancers and pups.

(Cont.) Problem two, the placement of Monk Lancer in the latest iteration is at the beginning of the timeline as opposed to the end like it was in the first. Due to this change, I overlooked the fact that the other lancer dialogues where FP continues to refer to lancers as pups now takes place after Monk Lancer, so it doesn't make sense for FP to realize lancers are not pups due to Monk Lancer. This made it seem like lancers were indeed pups in the canon of the mod. Finally, due to my disconnection from the Rain World community, I had forgotten just how anthropomorphized slugcats were in the eyes of the average player. This lent to the perception of lancers being less 'juvenile wild animals' and more 'children'.

(Cont.) These huge oversights combined to make the joke Five Pebbles makes about pregnancy seem as though it was directed at a child. I want to be clear that this is totally on me for not seeing that before we implemented the dialogue. Going forward, the dialogue has been updated to remove the joke, clarify the lore of lancers a little better, as well as retcon the 'dwarf adult' explanation behind the lancers, which is to say lancers are indeed intended to be slugpups now. I deeply apologize for the confusion and disgust the previous dialogue caused and I hope now it's clear how that mistake made it to release. Thank you!

@Storm0267 the art, dialog, etc is done for base three lancers but there's no huge world change (only some timeline swap) cuz there's no level editor in the team + i'd like to keep this project's scope small. it's just enough changes that tells slightly different story for each.

Survivor, Hunter, Monk do have custom dialogs. Watcher Lancer is taking long because the writer's working on new dialogs for its story.

Not directly, but using DMS for normal counterpart does affect Lancer. You should also use Custom Color from Remix. However, you cannot disable horn.
