If you choose to activate it (which you do not have to do) you just need to periodically hit the acknowledge button to confirm that you're still awake / alive. If you initially turn it on it will also trigger prompting you to acknowledge.

Connect two together (orientation doesn't matter), start both engines, only turn on the masterkey on one unit and it should work.
