Unfortunately, there's no way for a mod to add options to the game. If you're technically minded, you can open your own multilevel_overlay.png and modify the layer transparency in a paint program. It's located in: 'Dwarf Fortress\data\vanilla\vanilla_environment\graphics\images'
There are also a few different z-level fog mods on the workshop if you search.

Made it so much easier for me to get a quick, at-a-glance detail of what level it is I'm actually viewing. Particularly useful outside of the fort with numerous elevations on screen. 10/10.

I had a similar thought. The difference between the first z-level and the second is the most important, with the others rapidly falling off. Being able to set a curve would be nicer than a uniform density increase, but a better default formula would be fine too. Even though it can be a lot harder to discern a one z-level difference with the reduced fog mods, I still prefer them because they make it easier to see things like caves and hills.

Right now the difference between adjacent z layers is so small I'm making mistakes related to depth.

This might be outside what modders can do but it would be nicer if the fog fade was logarithmic, so that one z layer away still has noticable fog but many z layers away still have the ground as faintly visible.

No, unfortunately not. You can only use one of the fog mods at a time, because there's only one sprite that they all change to get their effect.

Of course. There are already a few different versions people have uploaded on the workshop. Including a white fog version which I personally think looks better than the default blue. They just changed the color of my modified .png and re-uploaded it as a new mod. It would be nice if the modding API supported custom menu options, so we could just make one fog mod to rule them all, with density and hue options in the menu.

Works with all 3 mods i tested (This one, Audible Alerts and Transparent Smoothing).

Just copy all the files inside the mod folder's "Objects" or "Graphics" folders, into for example vanilla_interface
It should load in your old saves too.

I don't think so, but you can manually replace your vanilla multilevel_overlay.png with the modded version.

I tried to make a version to completely remove the fog, but it doesn't really seem to work. Maybe it was my own error, but I just couldn't get a good result. You're free to go ahead and try modifying the .png image in the mod to see how that changes things. You'll need to delete the mod in the installed_mods folder and make a new world each time you want to test it.
