(game version is 23.0f)
I have no knowledge on how the game would handle such large amount of objects. I believe it stops calculating physics for objects outside of the camera, but I have no concrete proof of it. I know it does that for particle effects and I believe a reasonable developer would have made the same for physical objects too.

but either way I would say increase the yield or asteroid density a bit as the sparsity of asteroids makes it time consuming and annoying to go mining
or at least reduce it by a lesser amount
