Go buy a ram stick, then your laptop should be able to handle hl2:update, albeit really laggy since the high quality prebaked raytraced shadows are really resource hungry.
I think you should play hl2:update itself first for benchmarking. If your laptop can't handle it, then don't expect this to run any better in gmod.
This mod works on my machine.
Set your Gmod to 64 bit if you haven't already. Maybe this will help.
