It seems that whenever I place this part it's always rotated counter clockwise as seen from the back. What's going on?

Put two pods on tail and head of the ship can reduce the drift tendency

Penny: May try combining it with traditional propellers....it might help a bit....
This is intended for very large displacement ships with high turning inertia...so...it exert a a high yaw moment...for lower displacement ships, it might become uncontrollable...sry

By which I mean even one of these turns any ship into a nigh-uncontrollable drift machine, no matter where on the fore-aft axis you put it.

I'd like to ask if you had uploaded the module yet, as I've just subscribed to yours and enabled it already, yet it doesn't show up in the add parts menu.
