In 1970, Aperture Laboratories had developed a Xen grenade practically 30 years before Black Mesa ever discovered the dimension in their own studies. To the wishes of it's founder and CEO, Cave Johnson, acquired Xenian crystals were embedded into a lemon, then being placed into a break-action shell that opened on impact.
