hi friends sorry for the late reply i had issues with rpfm and lost some progress on a mod so i had to work to replace the lost data. i plan on adding a slaanesh artillery piece soon after tzeentch i am thinking about something with high mobility. for the skycutter i think its a good idea and given similarity to a bolt thrower it should be easy.

hemlo moddy is updated changes are:

i) added a poisonous vortex to the explosion from the nurgle carronade in my testing its performance is greatly improved

ii) increased accuracy and slight increase to cost for high elf and dark elf mortars

for me, balancing is always one of the most difficult parts of modding and i appreciate your feedback. the low accuracy is due to the missile spread, shell spin and calibration distance. I wanted to make a magical artillery piece that would create a "rain of fire"/ D-day bombardment pattern sacrificing accuracy for large and deadly aoe. this is contrasted with the sapherian/ghrondian bolt thrower with high single target damage. Regardless, I want what i create to be fun to play with and will play around with the calibration area and marksmanship stats to hopefully make them funner to play with.

on the topic of balancing they are meant to be more for aoe purposes than single target so the single unit test with darkshards is not where this unit is strongest. They excel against large armies with lots of infantry and in my testing can accrue more than their custom battle purchase cost in terms of value before the two armies close into melee. I find that moving armies actually help them deal more damage because of the spread of the projectiles.

@DocHolliday, thanks for the feedback. the name "mortar" is because I built and animated the models based on the mortar animation skeleton and model (empire mortar unit). it is therefore the barrel size and way the artillery piece fires ( specific mortar animation) rather than firing arc behind the naming. I can alter the name to something less immersion breaking if you like.

Also maybe it's just my bias against these "mortars" talking now, but the accuracy seems ATROCIOUS... I watched a level 2 mortar unit fire 6 volleys at a single 90 man unit of darkshards. A single "shell" hit the unit out of all 6 volleys, and it killed none of them... I can only surmise these would be virtually useless on an open field battle at earlier levels where ALL of the enemy units are moving... Again I love the mod in general, very cool idea, but these elven mortars end up being less practical than another unit of SoA imo.

A mortar is defined as a weapon that fires shells at HIGH angles. So if that's not what you what these platforms to be, it would be neat if you named them properly, as I was very disappointed when I loaded into a siege battle only to see the Elven rocket battery from the only other Elven artillery mod having a higher firing arc than the mortars XD. That one just uses vanilla cathayan rocket battery stats, so the fact that it's coming from another mod had nothing to do with it.

Why does the Elven mortar have a LOWER firing arc than a rocket battery????? You know what mortars are used for primarily right??? The one reason to use mortars, their incredibly high firing arc, is just gone... I know I'm sounding like an ass talking like this but cmon... There are already multiple mortar units already in the frickin game... Why are you trying to reinvent the wheel??? I love the models and the mod in general, but that makes no sense.

I would love to see wood elves being able to breaktrough city walls, i have a mod were treemen
can slingaway boulders but it feels so lame and take forever to bring down the walls.

I think you can add springald, ballistae or mangonel to create some artillery for bretonnia. and they can be cheaper, less precise and have more models than traditional 4-model artillery.(like the dwarf springald) And you can also create some sort of stronger artillery for vampire coast, since their current ones are out of date.:steamhappy:

Btw, in the Malus Darkblade books there are witchfire (?) canisters shot from bolt throwers exploding in a powerful green fire that burns everything, especially demons
