For anyone using this mod, since it's looking abandoned. The reactor is "easy" to research but the drive has a very small chance per month so it don't shows in the project list. To solve that go the mod files (TIProjectTemplate.json) and change the lines around the "Project_EpsteinFusionDrive", the lines are:

"factionAvailableChance": 15,
"maxUnlockChance": 10,
-------------------
change the numbers to :

"factionAvailableChance": 100,
"maxUnlockChance": 100,

The chance will be 100% after that.

Suprisingly, the mod still works perfectly. You do need to use console commands to get the parts though. The UI icons are also broken. But it works perfectly in the solar map and in battle.

For some unknown reasons, the game just crash every time I entered late stage. I tried to uninstall/reinstall different mods and replay the game many times. I thought this drive mod would be the least possible mod to cause the crash so I never tried to disable it. In the end.... somehow I disabled this one and I could just keep playing from my latest save without jumping out.... I wonder whats going one, this is so weird.

So, I subscribed to this mod. I researched all the prerequisites, including the Epstein Reactor. But when I search for the Drive on the Tech Tree, the tooltip says "Your scientists have given up on this project." Help?

For those wondering, this is compatible with 0.3.107. It's completely additive, beyond using a handful of other game assets (but it just points to them, it doesn't modify them). It also has the variable they added for drive cooling methods properly defined.

It's highly unlikely this is causing crashes if you're getting them. With the one exception being if you've updated from a previous version and something went wrong in that process.

Sorry for the late reply, just seeing this.

1. navigate to the mod folder for example, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Terra Invicta\Mods\Enabled\The Expanse Epstein Drive

2. Use a text editer to open up TIProjectTemplate.json file

3. Look for the json object with the key = friendlyName, and value = Epstein Fusion Drive
It should look like "friendlyName": "Epstein Fusion Drive"

4. Within that same block, look for factionAvailableChance, initialUnlockChance, maxUnlockChance and set these values to a higher percentage. so for example, 100 would mean it's 100% chance of unlocking.

Could the recent patch have broken this mod? I'm having constant CTDs after AI picks a certain tech to research (no idea which one). Only mods which add techs i use are Hypermag Weapons and Epstein Drive mod.

...So I've had all the prerequisite tech, including the Epstein reactor, unlocked and researched but never got the opportunity to go for the drive itself... I've currently been researching Future Tech: Energy about 27 times and it still hasn't unlocked.

Not the first time that this has happened, either. It's an absurdly low chance of unlock.

Is there any way to increase the chance of the Epstein Fusion Drive appearing in the Faction Projects? This is my third play through where I've gotten the reactor and radiators but the drive never appeared. The very first play through (v 0.3.35) I got the drive, but sadly it keeps appearing as 'missed projects' and even with 'Future Energy Tech' it never pops into the cue.

I'm sure that if you're researching the Tech you would really like to use the drive.

Side comment, does marking any drive/reactor tech as 'obsolete' disable the drive from showing up, or do I just need the Epstein Fusion Reactor?

@Henri Black It may be that you just didn't get the roll for the drive. My chance to roll the drive is 25% and i'm pretty sure I missed, so now I wait until I can do the research that lets me force a re-roll of all the projects to unlock it. mousing over the project can tell you the chance to roll.

Since you are working on adding more expanse related mods here are a couple of items that would seem to be easy to implement.

Based on the article you posted it sounds like a new radiator would be required to maintain accuracy. Something that acts as a place holder for when an engine/reactor can radiate heat in equilibrium with a material maybe call it Tantalum Hafnium Carbide Heat Sheild? It should be very heavy, but because the system generates very little heat this shouldn't be an issue.

Also I would love to see some kind of point defense cannons added since we don't currently have a projectile based pd system.

I am absolutely here for The Expanse conversions and addons. You can bet your bottom dollar as soon as a a Mars ship set comes out I'll be jumping into it. Love the engine though, looking forward to more.

I am having an issue with the mod as well. I have followed your advice by unsubbing, deleting the files from the mod folder, and then starting over. Unfortunately, this didn’t resolve the issue.

I think I have found the problem with the radiator tech when I was trying to figure out why it was displaying ‘TIProjectTemplate.displayName.Project_EpsteinFusionDrive=Epstein Fusion Drive’ in the full tech tree ingame instead of just ‘Epstein Fusion Drive’.

The ‘TIProjectTemplate.en’ and ‘TIProjectTemplate.json’ files only have the Reactor and Drive projects listed, but not the Radiator project lines.

I would add them myself, but I have no idea what I am doing. Your help would be appreciated.

Yeah that is exactly what I did, the mod just has not updated since I first downloaded it. Which was like maybe your first iteration of the mod. Too used to games like Stellaris and Rimworld keeping things like that up to date constantly.

@Dildo can you check the mod folder and see how many files are in it? You may have to delete the folder and re-do the download/install process for the game to have the update.

@Dildo You should use the included Epstein Reactor and Epstein Radiator... they give you the needed power and heating with realistic additional weight. Also, the power type has not been z-pinch since the very first release, so is your game somehow not using the latest update? Your first comment about the x6 drive missing the zero was also fixed in the second update to the mod.

You need to update this to change how the drive calculates waste heat.

In the cooling value it needs to change from 'calc' to 'open'

Because if you don't then all your ships are going to weigh in excess of 100k tons just to mount the rads to handle all that thrust and that totally tanks the Dv value of the ship in doing so.

Additionally, despite the fact that you are keeping as true to the math as possible from the SF site for the drive, its consuming too much power for the Z-pinch to provide. Right now the most you can mount is 4 drives from the max six.

Playing late game and notice the drive was overridden or removed by some tech at some point, not sure what but It's def gone and the mods is enabled and the tech was researched.
