You asked for tips, and the best one I can give is patience. I used to just rush my maps because I wanted to watch my civilizations grow. But now I just build maps and not even deal with the AI.

The Rune map I made took about six hours total, done over three separate days. And a lot of it was just chaotic scribbling. Just work on one biome at a time, and remember that the more variety you throw in, like mountains, hills, and sand, the more visually appealing it will be.
