The emishi were famed for their skill in horse archery and their unique swords, and had a distinct culture from the korean immigrant yamato that conquered them. I would love to see a mod that has these characteristics, either for rise of the samurai for the fujiwara, or for an overhaul mod.

4 years late but it was a Greek term for savages. The greeks during the Pyrrhic war considered Romans to be barbarians.

by "barbarians" you probably mean the Jomon (Ainu). Barbarians is only a Roman term for Germanic, Celtic and the other peoples who was in the Romans way.

TheCakeIsaPie 12 Jul, 2014 @ 6:04pm
AeBika, are you sure about that? As the description says, he was the first shogun.

I twould be great if someone would make a mod about Asuka period of Japan where we could conquer Emishi and fight against Shilla and Tang China alliance with our Baekje allies...

@Twisted Aero

I can't play as the defenders. Whether or not I select attaking side or the defending side, I still start outside the fort.

so interesting bits of info:
since this took place in the 8th century, what most ppl thought of as "samurai" were still in their baby steps form (they didnt become prominent until pretty much the era that Rise of the Samurai takes place, during the Genpei war. u could say they were there a tad bit before that too during the Taira clan's "reign" (not gonna explain y its in quotes, go research or take a class urself). anyways point here is that, since the samurai were still in their baby form, the imperial army probably had very little mobile cavalry (as a coherent unit, rather than a few random generals here and there).

another thing, barbarians werent just localized to Northern Europe, there were "barbarians" round China, pretty much anywhere that a group of ppl were still doin the tribal culture thing and had neighbors who were an "Empire". if u want to argue the etymology of "barbarian" go for it, idc.

The movie Princess Mononoke features an Emishi protagonist and it is strongly suggested he is of Ainu descent, so I guess?
EmotionallyBroken 3 Jul, 2014 @ 12:52pm
Is the phrase "Barbarians of the North" referring to the Ainu people?
