Necroid species 3 is bugged, game thinks there's 60 leader portraits instead of 41. The game_setup array on line 694 of 15_portraits_necroid.txt goes to N3_60 instead of N3_41.

Update - 06/9/25

Aaaand.... Yeah, This *could* be considered the part two of the previous update but, to be honest, since i'm nowadays adding one portrait set per update This is considered It's own thing. I just went with the 'updating the Ant girls' secondary mission and ended up not giving enough time to the 'mermaids' mission. Enough yapping Here are this update's content:

- Added Mermaids! First Aquatic portrait set!. There are 52 Mermaids.
- Added back the vanilla greeting sounds for all toxoids and all Aquatic portraits. This finished my mission of adding the sounds back from vanilla to the anime girls.

Didn't have time to work on additional content such as more thumbnails and such for the mod page but will try to do so in the coming days. Will also try to update the sister mod in the coming days. After that I'll take a small break.

The mermaids are a like 70% done, I need to finish working and beautifying the last few 10 mermaids which should take me a bit less than day, after that i would need to code them in, remove backgrounds and doing the few last annoying steps. Regardless, I really like how they are looking like so far, If you are curious you can check them in the link below which has a small collage of some mermaids, the ones that are already finished.

Update - 22/8/25

Another month, Another update. I kind of wanted to add the mermaids with this update but ended up falling short on time. Regardless, I'll just post what i got.

- Reworked and fixed the old Ant girl set, Now is up to modern standards with 57 (23 more portraits!) portrait set and modernized graphics.
- Added all the base-game sounds for the necroids. The toxoids and aquatic sounds will be added with the next update and that should be it for the base-game sounds!.

Hopefully I'll have enough time to work on the mermaids next week.

Besides, this mod shouldn't cause that. I see no reason it could. This mode doesn't really modify any actual code, only replaces graphic files.

After the update, the game started crashing when I select a planet with the left mouse button, this happens in both single-player and multiplayer games.

Next update will have updated ant girls + mermaids.

To give you a clrearer idea:
In original game each portarit set have technically the same portaraits, just redrawn a bit. Color here, detail there.
But if you will make them black-and-while, where "person" is black, and background is white, you will see that portraits are nearly identical within one set. And even between sets the poses and overall positionning of head-body-hands is very similar.
This allowed PDX animators to use the same template over and over again - in other words, there are actually very few uniquie portrait animations in Stellaris.

But in this case, portaraits are different, and different by A LOT. Which skyrokets the amount of work to be done. as you need unique animation for nearly each portrait, and this will take years for one person to do in his free time.

Xray163 got it correct, much truth. Is more like I would need to make 2d skeletons and... uhh, I think I already pretty much explained this before in this comment thread. To make them animated I would need to make a skeleton that moves in a loop and do that for each different pose these images have and... well, they all have different poses. Last time I checked there were at least 1600 images

animating portraits is significantly harder than static portraits. since you can't just upload a GIF and have it magically work. IIRC you have to use some weird file format for it to work

@Tempes Skumark - I don't think anyone asked that but yeah, I plan to change all portraits that stellaris add from now on until I stop playing this game which may happen eventually. As i may have said before, each blank spot on the roster shown on the second image of the mod page represent a portrait set that hasn't been replaced yet; Portrait sets that haven't been animefied yet.

Update - 21/7/25

This past month I spent most of my times doing other stuff, didn't even play stellaris or even touched this mod at all. Spent most of my time playing Umamusume on mah phone and uhhhh... what was i going to say? Whatever, Finally got to work on finishing the Umamusume set, It proved a bit more complicated than expected but yeah, worked out.

- Ended up changing a bit the style of some of the Umas from the last update, 9 were slightly changed, 1 was fixed since it had 4 fingers (My bad, original gangster).
- Umamusume set finished!. 30 more Umas were added to the umamusume set. The total right now is 55, i just picked the ones i liked the most.
- Updated roster image.

would it be possible for you to put the portraits in the machine section of the set to somewhere else? I would love to use some of them but i don't want to play a machine empire. It's totally fine if you don't want to since i know modding in stellaris is annoying.

@Tempes Skumarck - Yeah, owl girls seemed like the best candidates when I was doing some tests. I was trying them as the usual but eyed owl girl with the forehead with the usual owl thingy and the wings being actually a cape or a poncho. Didn't have much time to work on this mod the past few weeks tho, will come back to finish the Umamusume set when I get some time, then mermaids, then likely owls.

Update - 27/6/25

Finally settled on the style for the Umamusume set. I'm still working on it, but I wanted to have something ready for the Umamusume: Pretty Derby EN release. I missed the date by a day, but oh well—I can at least say that I'm about 30% done.
If you have any favorite Umamusume you'd like me to add (and who aren't in the set yet), this is your opportunity to tell me so I can include them.

- Settled on a style for the Umamusume.
- Added a few Umamusume to the horse set. There are now 25 Umamusume, horse girls. How hungry... 🗿
- Added default greeting sounds for all Plantoids.
- Added default greeting sounds for all Lithoids.
- Added default greeting sounds for all Fungoids

Update - 25/6/25

After a lot of time not working on this mod i finally decide to finish the wolf set, Yeah. Now that i'm thinking about i should have also took some time to add more base game greetings sounds before actually updating. Well, I suppose i'll work on that for the next update.

Update - 31/5/25

Small update. Was testing some stuff and ended up fixing some stuff from the times of Anime Fantasy Species Pack.

- Fixed one tiny problem that caused one of the mammalian portraits to not show, (typo from the authors of the Original mod.)
- Removed All the umamusume portraits from Mam1. The Umamusume horsegirls are going to all, i think, be used on the horse girl portrait set i'm cooking. Probably should be named umamusume set rather than just horse girl set.
- Added 3 wolf girls (Next big patch). The drawing style has already been decided, I just need to let them stay in the oven for a little more time.
- Experimenting a bit with horse girls, I added 2 Umamusume girls, I haven't really decided on what style i should have them as so they are subject to change.
- Added greeting sounds to all molluscoids.
- Fixed one Angel girl, She used to have 6 fingers (Your honor, i plead Oopsie daisy) and no Halo.
- Fixed one small turtle girl whose shell was a bit too long.

@ᛣ Munin ᛉ - There are some, You can check, for example, my other mod — whose development is paused but still kind of holds up — Imperium Races.
I originally intended to make multiple races but ended up just making two so far. Pretty sure i've seen one or two other mods that have anime guys.

- Fixed some of the portraits for the default Prescripted Empires. More like a band-aid type solution but it works.

Update - 31/5/25

Last update of the month — I'll rest for a bit now.

- Dragon Girl Set finished; there are 54 dragon girls now.
- Re-added many base game greeting sounds. All of the following now have greeting sounds: all Humanoid, Machine, Mammalian, Reptilian, Avian, and Arthropoid portraits.
- Swapped the Mantis portrait around. This shouldn't break anything, but it may cause some blank portraits if you were using one of these in your games. Sorry if this broke immersion — I just wanted to prepare things for a possible future update where I plan to add more portraits to the Mantis and Roach sets.
- Continued experimenting with adding sounds without breaking achievement compatibility. New custom greeting for the SS portrait (though I’ll probably change it — it sounds a bit too neutral/dry).

Expect the update for the non-replacer mod within a week — I'm busy today and tomorrow.

Update - 27/5/25

Alright, been working on the dragon portrait rework and added a few of them... but the main reason I wanted to update the mod was because I re-added a lot of greeting sounds from the base game! Also a custom greeting sound!

- Added 10 dragon girls and modified one. The objective is to finish modifying/adding to this set and then update the other mod.
- Re-added a bunch of base game greeting sounds. All the synthetic portraits and all of the avian portraits now have their respective greeting sounds from the base game.
- And lastly... I experimented and added a custom greeting sound set for the tengus! Tell me what you think in the comments. It may be a bit low in volume, may change it alongside the next update (hopefully the dragon girl update).

Feedback is always good to read.

Update - 16/5/25

The poll is almost about to end and it would seem that it is very likely that the "Add the vanilla sounds to every single anime portrait" option is going to win. Regardless, i will still, as per planned, start adding the greetings sounds to my personally worked on images and then work on adding the sounds to the other anime girl. Well, uhm... Uhhh....

- Added Angel girls, 51 of them
- Added greeting sound to a lot of my portrait sets, I forgor how many or which ones. 4? 6? Around that amount. Not nearly done.

I also removed the "[Poll in description]" part of the title since, well, i'm removing the poll and ending it in a few hours. 9 or so hours.

nice to see a mod that's an up to date version of the original anime galaxy. sure all the characters are different, this is far more stable thanks to it being updated for 4.0. Thanks for making this mod. and ironman compatible is a bonus, I get to have my anime and my achievements.

The creation streak ended and i gotta admit that i kind of made these Ent girls a bit generic due to low fuel on the creative department, they look a bit repetitive i'd say. Probably next portrait addition update is going to be in a month or two, we'll see. For now tho, I'll work on small updates to add the greeting sounds to portraits; It doesn't seem like the "NO, LET THEM STAY MUTE" vote is going to win the poll.

- Finished the Ent girl set. There are 55 portraits.

Will see if i update the non-replacer mod tomorrow.

Will likely stop this creation streak with the Ent girls. Feeling like the gas is running low already. Next update should be last in a while. Will update the non-replacer version after the Ent set is finished.

- Finished the frog girl set. A total of 56 form part of it.
- Added 17 Ent girls with their respective greetings sound.
- I added the vanilla greeting sound to the Floran set.

Animation and animated stuff are a no go, They are not easy to mass produce.

You see, the thing that all the animated stuff have in common is that they all have the same starting position which makes it easy for 'bones' to be added to it to rig it. the bones then do a looping animation and that's what you see in-game. However, my images all have different poses and have different proportions which means i would have to make custom bone structure for each and every single image, making my work be at least 45 times more difficult on the avarage multiplied by the amount of portrait i already made. (there around 45 portraits per set but some have up to 90 or so)

Update - 08/5/25

- Finished the tutel set, there are 55 tutel girls.
- Added 11 frog girls, will eventually finish it.
- I updated the Roster to add the new additions.
- Updated the description to reflect the new additions.

IMPORTANT (Well, Kind of): I want to decide if i should add voices vanilla sounds/voices that the game normally plays when opening comms with empires. The poll is on the description for a week or maybe two. Please help me decide.
