I know it's for boats, but number 3 still applies for aircraft. You usually have to give-way to other aircraft that are approaching from your right, so you want a good view out your right-hand window. Usually the captain of an airliner will sit on the left because, as far as I know, he's the one that usually gets out of his seat to deal with any issues with passengers and crew; While the first officer is the one doing most of the flying to my knowledge.
