@Mlie, is this working still in 1.6? Just curious
Mlie 12 Aug, 2024 @ 12:25pm
Since this mod has been reported working in 1.5 I added it to the No Version Warning-mod

Awesome. Thanks for the response.

You can safely ignore the incompatibility warning. The parts of the game that are changed by this mod will never, ever be altered by the developer.

Any chance of an update to 1.5? Just curious

Sure, just pick a moment when all the sea otters happen to be in the water.
Maritisa 27 Feb, 2023 @ 10:05pm
o rite
well, of all land mammals then
Rad Grin Archer  [author] 27 Feb, 2023 @ 3:43pm
@Maritisa second-most dense! sea otters take the cake.
Maritisa 27 Feb, 2023 @ 9:12am
Actually, the funny thing is, the reason we can't shear chinchillas *as-is* for fur is not because you, well, can't, but actually solely because there's just not a good adhesive to compensate for losing the skin connection. Chinchilla fur isn't like wool, it doesn't bunch up into spoolable fibers, it's extremely fine and unbelievably dense, the densest of all earth's animals, in fact.
Unless you gave the critters a 'second skin' or something that they could be coaxed to shed, it is unlikely that you could make this happen on a genetic level while retaining the desired properties of chinchilla fur. Otherwise, you'd need some hyper-efficient adhesive process that can stick all unfathomable numbers of little hairs at their roots to something like synthread.

But this is also the same game where cotton has been modified so extensively that it yields raw cloth without any processing and I love my floofball friends so I can overlook this leap of logic just fine LOL.

Your humble subscriber shall continue to continue to build chinchilla fur armchairs in service to the bus gods so that hopefully will not happen, but the information is nice regardless!
Rad Grin Archer  [author] 27 Oct, 2022 @ 3:10pm
Your humble developer provides.

For future reference, the odds of me having to actually update anything in this mod are basically zero. If I get hit by a bus, you can just ignore the version warnings and it will all be fine.
ArmyofBoo 25 Oct, 2022 @ 6:37pm
your humble subscriber requests to expand my chinchilla empire into version 1.4...
BogHermit 14 Sep, 2022 @ 6:56pm
Was pretty interested in this, but it looks like it means you can't fence the chinchillas anymore...my base got *swarmed* XD

We are space pirates-slavers-cannibals, but even we cant hurt this cute thing, TY!

THANK YOU SO MUCH :steamhappy:

@RisingDark Since you asked nicely, I just created and posted a mod called Guinea Pig Farming which works the same way. Let me know if there is anything wrong with it, though it seems to be working right to me.

Guinea pigs have 33% the food consumption that chinchillas do, so for balance, I gave them 40% the wool production. Maybe genetically modified space chinchillas are just bigger :)
Will 18 Aug, 2021 @ 3:13pm
Would you consider making a mod like this, but for guinea pigs? I just like the idea of ranching space guinea pigs for wool and fur alongside chinchillas lol
Rad Grin Archer  [author] 8 Aug, 2021 @ 3:38pm
@denil380 Turns out it is not hard, and I have now set it up for multiversion.
ArmyofBoo 4 Aug, 2021 @ 10:35pm
@Red Grin Archer Thank you sm!!!
denil380 4 Aug, 2021 @ 2:04am
Hey, Is it that hard to multi version? your mod change version surprise me
Rad Grin Archer  [author] 2 Aug, 2021 @ 5:11pm
@ArmyofBoo Just did! Cheers.
ArmyofBoo 26 Jul, 2021 @ 11:25pm
Planning to update to 1.3? Would like to continue my chinchilla fur empire in the new version.
QTpye 30 Jun, 2021 @ 7:33pm
"This mod further emphasizes the entirely canon nature of genetically modified space chinchillas."

fantastic

@Yootah I can't wait to get my Chinchillas this year! It always makes me sad farming them in this game...
Yootah 24 Dec, 2020 @ 7:37am
I have three of these f*ckers irl and you could imagine how it feels hunting them even for food in-game. But thanks to you, I can finally farm my favorite poopy floof bois! :steamhappy:
Vattende 20 Dec, 2020 @ 1:34am
Nice game idea, i agree.
While real chinchillas are real cute, the in-game vanilla ones are useless. I tried in my beginnings to hold some for the fur, but to much time needed, to much food.
So yes, cute addition, and the wool should be cozy and warm. :SBpanda:
Rad Grin Archer  [author] 19 Dec, 2020 @ 4:08pm
Nah, it also doesn't grow long enough. It grows about 3/4" long and then falls out eventually. Rather than imagining the fur getting lengthy and sheared, it would be more like brushing them and collecting the fur that was ready to come out. So a faster fur growth rate would lead to more fur.
WillowTheWisp 19 Dec, 2020 @ 2:42pm
so the issue is pure speed? As in hypothetically, if someone wanted to, they could keep a chinchilla very clean and away from anything they didn't want chewed on, and the hair could grow long enough to spin? No plans on actually doing this, I mostly just wanna know how long chinchilla hair can get if given the chance!
Rad Grin Archer  [author] 19 Dec, 2020 @ 11:46am
@WillowTheWisp Non-genetically modified terrestrial chinchillas don't grow their fur fast enough to be useful. Mostly they poop a lot. Completely useless, and they'd chew on your loom.
Rad Grin Archer  [author] 19 Dec, 2020 @ 9:43am
@handfullofdust You're goddamn right they're space chinchillas. Description updated.
handfullofdust 18 Dec, 2020 @ 6:02pm
@WillowTheWisp Chinchilla yarn isn't actually made from chinchilla fibers- I've double checked a few brands and it's all polyester and rayon. Chinchilla fur coats do require the animal to be skinned traditionally. This mod is wildly unrealistic, unless of course these are space chinchillas you can shave like a sheep. A tiny, tiny sheep with soft, soft fluff.
WillowTheWisp 17 Dec, 2020 @ 3:29pm
Interesting premise! Only tangential, but do you know if irl living chinchillas can be harvested for hairs that can be spun into yarn? I've seen that yarn can be made, but not if it can be acquired from living animals.
Mizzles 17 Dec, 2020 @ 9:56am
This is exactly the mod I was waiting for!
