As a matter of fact, there are control cab for Series 12 coaches as well [ja.wikipedia.org], but this one was converted from Suhafu12 in 1998, so it may be a little different.
(I may build this carriage someday, too.)

British Rail Mark 2 DBSO were built in 1979, so a control car in the 70s isn't crazy at all.

Reversible? Those carriages have driver rooms or something?
