Yeah, it does sound kinda cringe-worthy. The thing is, though: The Mercenary (at least as far as his voice goes) is a parody of over-the-top action heroes from the 1990s-era FPS games, and to a lesser extent chessy 1980s action movies. So, him sounding over-the-top and kinda stupid is part of the joke.
