To anyone else that might be interested in trying them out, I found success beelining for the first shop and cycling stock for pacts with +max HP. It's especially handy if you get one whose "negative" effect is fire tiles spawning periodically.
Mods installation can be a bit strange. Try clicking the checkbox of Firechild in the in-game mods menu. Hit install then check character select. If it's not there, go back to the mod menu and click install mods again.
200 HP? This is fine, just kill them before they get to attack.
